Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts Ababu Namwamba visited the Kenyan Embassy in Uganda to follow up on the preparations of the East Africa Pamoja bid, which if successful will see Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania cohost the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Namwamba met the Kenyan ambassador to Uganda Retired Major General George Owinow who briefed him on the progress of the Kenyan neighbours towards hosting the tournament.

The visit is part of the planned seamless coordination to ensure that there is absolute coherence as the three nations prepare to beat Algeria, Egypt, and Namibia to the hosting rights of the inaugural football bonanza.

Kenya Sports technical team from Sports Kenya accompanied the CS with the aim of visiting the Namboole Stadium as part of an exchange program.

Uganda earmarked the Namboole Stadium as one of the grounds to host the tournament and it has been a work in progress to ensure that it meets the standards to be CAF accredited.

If successful, the joint bid will see the AFCON played on East African soil for the first time since its inception.

When launching the joint bid at State House, President William Ruto accorded the CS full mandate to oversee the process of ensuring the process was successful.

“The work of prosecuting our joint bid now begins in earnest and Kenya intends to make its full contribution to it. Namwamba is duly seized of this assignment and is mobilizing his team, liaising with his counterparts in Uganda and Tanzania to formulate a winning bid so that the people of our countries can look forward to participating in a successful 2027 tournament.

“We hope that our joint bid will motivate all our sides not only to qualify for the 2027 tournament but also excel beyond previous achievements,” said President Ruto.

Kenya’s joint bid is part of the Kenya Kwanza government’s plan to revitalize sports in the country and ensure that the youth monetized their talents.
