Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday, July 28 drove himself to the Azimio la Umoja interdenominational prayer service held in memory of those who lost their lives during the anti-government protests.

Uhuru arrived at the Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka (SKM) Command Centre in Karen driving his Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon by himself and was joined by Azimio leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka. Raila was however driven in a separate car.

He then exchanged pleasantries with the likes of National Assembly leader of Minority Opiyo Wandayi and Secretary of Political Affairs for KANU Fredrick Okango who were also in attendance.

The Azimio public meeting is his second outing after the August 9 polls, with his last coming on September 7, 2022, when the opposition held a meeting of leaders elected in the coalition.

Azimio is holding its requiem mass after holding a vigil on Wednesday, July 26.

“Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party wishes to invite Kenyans of goodwill for Interdenominational Requiem Mass in honour of the slain and injured victims of police brutality during recent protests against high taxes and cost of living. The mass will be held at the De Paul Grounds in Karen, off Langata Road starting at 9 am tomorrow, 28th July 2023,” read in part a statement from the coalition sent to newsrooms

Azimio also stated that the prayers for the victims will take place in other chosen counties across the country while urging its supporters and Kenyans in general to keep the peace during the nationwide prayers which will continue through the weekend.

“We, therefore, appeal to Kenyans to keep the peace during these prayers. We also encourage Kenyans to continue lighting candles and laying flowers in respect and love for our slain and injured patriots,” Azimio added.

“This exercise continues through the weekend. The death and the injuries must be our reason to fight harder for taxes and prices to come down.”

The Uhuru-Raila-led coalition is set to issue further directives regarding its next course of action during today's meeting.
