The defining moment of every New Year celebration worldwide must be fireworks. After the countdown, billions of people are treated to fireworks displays; Kenya is no exception.

Despite these days being viewing hotspots for fireworks displays across the country, some Kenyans have had to create fireworks displays for themselves. However, did you know you need a government permit to display your fireworks on New Year's?

The State Department for Mining on Saturday, December 30 notified Kenyans regarding acquiring permits to display fireworks from the Inspector of Explosives in line with the Explosives Act, which calls for strict regulations, control and sale of fireworks.

In a thread on X (formerly Twitter), the Mining Department emphasized the importance of imposing stringent regulations and control measures on the sale, storage, and utilization of fireworks.

According to the Department, it is therefore imperative for Kenyans to adhere to guidelines outlined in the Explosives Act to ensure the safety of lives and property

"It has become a tradition in towns and cities that every New Year’s Eve is marked by a spectacular display of fireworks. The thrill and excitement of having the night skies lit by explosions of fire and dazzling lights is an experience fireworks enthusiasts look forward to. However, danger always lurks.

"By their very nature, fireworks are explosives. They are dangerous. Any careless handling has the potential to turn into a serious accident, trigger fire outbreaks, cause loss of property and even deaths. Protection of lives and property calls for strict regulations and control of the sale, storage and usage of fireworks as stipulated under the Explosives Act," stated the department in part.

Persons intending to stage fireworks displays are therefore required to get a permit from the Inspector of Explosives under the department to ensure compliance with all safety measures.

Further, Officers from the State Department should be notified and be present during fireworks displays.

"As you celebrate and make merry, always think about your safety and that of your loved ones. And remember, it is a crime to sell fireworks to children," cautioned the department.
