Wilson Airport in Nairobi was on Thursday, October 5 named Africa's best regional airport at the 2023 Aviators Africa Towers Awards.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) announced this in a statement as its Managing Director (MD), Henry Ogoye received the prestigious award from the Regional Airport manager overseeing Wilson and Northern Region Airports Joseph Okumu at his office.

Wilson, considered one of the busiest airports in terms of aircraft movement in East and Central Africa, defeated competitors based in South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria to be the best in the region.

"We are thrilled to announce that Wilson Airport has been honoured with the prestigious Regional Airport of the Year Award at this year’s Aviators Africa Tower Awards! In a fierce competition, Wilson Airport outshone competitors, including Kimberly Airport in South Africa, Kumasi Airport in Ghana, and Uyo Airport in Nigeria, in the Brand category.

The Aviators Africa Tower Awards, commonly known as the Tower Awards, are intended to recognize, celebrate, and honour excellence and sustainability in the African aviation sector.

Organized by Aviators Africa, the Tower Awards celebrate and recognize outstanding achievements and sustainability within the African Aviation sector.

Further, it aims to recognize organizations and individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of African aviation.

This is to nurture innovative ideas and promote healthy competition, inventiveness, and creativity to achieve long-term success in the sector.

Additionally, the Tower Awards takes pride in being a homegrown event and is positioned to be Africa’s premier annual aviation event where airlines, airports, and the aviation value chain are honoured.

KAA celebrated the latest victory which highlights its unwavering dedication to excellence across all airports that it manages across the country.

Wilson Airport's bigger counterpart, the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi was on Thursday, February 23 named the African cargo airport of the year at the STAT Trade Times International Awards for its commitment to enhancing cargo services.

The same airport on September 6, 2023, earned the Level 2 'Reduction' certification alongside Moi International Airport (MIA) in Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret International Airports in a major environmental milestone that coincided with the country hosting the Africa Climate Summit (ACS).

The certification is under the Airports Council International (ACI) world’s esteemed Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Program.
