"We are proud to share that Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has been named the African Cargo Airport of the Year at the STAT Trade Times International Awards for Excellence in Air Cargo.

"This award recognizes JKIA's commitment to excellence in cargo infrastructure, systems, and services, and highlights its position as a top-performing cargo airport in the region. Congratulations to the entire team at JKIA for this well-deserved recognition!" stated KAA in part.

JKIA beat the likes of Cape Town International Airport and Johannesburg Airport, both in South Africa and the Mohammed V International Airport in Morocco.

It also beat Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius, Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in Ethiopia and Kigali International Airport in Rwanda.

Officials from JKIA were presented with a certificate of recognition as well as a trophy in celebration of its achievement.

The STAT Times International Awards for Excellence in Air Cargo will celebrate the achievements of organisations and the accomplishments of the champions of the industry.

JKIA has been working hard to enhance the experience for passengers travelling by air across the country and to other countries around the world as well as those using it to connect to other destinations.

In a bid to give them a world-class experience, the airport officially opened the newly-refurbished Terminals 1B and 1C, revamped at a cost of Ksh963 million.

It features an array of state-of-the-art features that include security features, modernised self-check-in points and a brand-new look and feels to rival some of the world's biggest airports.

The terminals also feature new waiting areas seemed to face the departure aprons to give passengers that luxury lounge experience that comes with waiting to board their flights.

KAA kicked off renovations of the terminals in January 2021 which were estimated to take 12 months. However, the launch was delayed owing to the addition of some aspects, the replacement of some systems and the destruction of two bridges that had connected two terminals to the old international terminals.

The two terminals were closed during the renovations, with airline operations moved to Terminal 1A and Terminal 2 including Lufthansa German Airlines, Qatar Airways, RwandAir, British Airways and Emirates. Other airlines that were migrated include UNHAS, Egypt Air, Air Uganda, Air Arabia, and Air Mozambique.
