Three people were on Wednesday evening, July 20 killed following a grisly road accident in Narok County.

Narok South Sub-County Police Commander Magdalene Chebet, while confirming the accident, said that the accident involved a 14-seater matatu and a lorry.

The matatu was heading to Kisii from Nairobi with a lorry heading in the opposite direction. It had 10 passengers at the time of the incident.

“The matatu was heading towards Bomet and had 10 passengers,” she said, as quoted by the Nation.

She noted that the accident occurred after the matatu driver avoided hitting a motorcycle and rolled several times, hitting the lorry.

A woman and two men died on the spot while others sustained injuries. The lorry driver was slightly injured and his passenger escaped unhurt.

"The injured were rushed to Longisa County Referral Hospital. The bodies of the victims were taken to the mortuary pending identification and post-mortem,” Chebet added.

The accident comes almost a week after six people were killed and eight others injured after a gas cylinder exploded in a matatu they were travelling in following a road accident along the Thika-Garissa highway.

The accident involved a head-on collision between a matatu and a car at the Kwa Majini bridge in Yatta, Machakos County.

Worrying statistics by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicated that 1,912 people have died in road accidents since January 1, 2022, which is a nine per cent increase from 1,754 in 2021.

Pedestrians accounted for the highest number of fatalities. 682 pedestrians were killed in accidents as compared to 573 who lost their lives in the same period last year.
