Eight people lost their lives on Monday, February 26 while several others sustained injuries following a road accident in Machakos County that involved a bus full of passengers.

According to Yatta sub-county police commander Jane Makau who confirmed the accident, the eight died on the spot following the accident that occurred on the Katangi-Machakos-Kitui-Nairobi road, a few kilometres from River Athi bridge.

The bus was said to have lost control and veered off the road before rolling into a ditch near Katangi Market.

Injured passengers and crew were rushed to hospital for specialised medical attention.

Photos that circulated online and seen by Viral Tea showed the bus destroyed with some of the seats strewn all over the accident scene.

Some other parts of the vehicle were also scattered across the road as locals crowded the section to witness what had happened.

Makau revealed that the accident involved the 42-seater minibus that was travelling from Kitui to Machakos when it crashed on Monday evening.

Minutes after the accident was reported, emergency service providers rushed to the scene to rescue the victims and assess the situation. The bus from Faith Safari was in the ditch as law enforcement officers waited for a tow truck to help lift the vehicle and rescue those who may be trapped underneath it.

Eventually, the responding officers cleared the scene and removed the bodies to Machakos Level 5 Hospital Mortuary while the wreckage was towed to Masii police station awaiting inspection.

A section of Kenyans had indicated that the matatu involved was known for speeding and overloading which may have caused the accident, further warning drivers to follow the allocated speed while driving along major highways.

The accident was reported a few hours after Elgeyo Marakwet Women Representative Caroline Ng'elechei Jeptoo survived a road accident she was involved in along the Moim-Kapkoi road in Uasin Gishu County.

Preliminary reports indicated that the vehicle's brakes had failed, causing it to overturn on a murram road.

Ng'elechei and her driver as well as other occupants had fortunately escaped with minor injuries. Photos seen by Viral Tea showed her Toyota Land Cruiser TZG rolled onto one of its sides in the middle of the murram road and sustaining a bit of damage.
