At least seven people have been killed in a tragic road accident that occurred along the Katito-Kendu Bay highway in Nyakach, Kisumu County.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the accident occurred when a lorry reportedly lost control and collided with a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Matatu at Nyalunya along the highway.

The matatu was full of passengers at the time of the crash, with the seven killed on the spot.

"Response teams are currently at the scene," stated Kenya Red Cross.

While confirming the incident, Kisumu Regional Traffic Commandant Allan Mwangi noted emergency service providers had already been dispatched to the scene, with several other people injured.

Reports indicated that the matatu was headed for Homa Bay when the lorry ferrying sand swerved from its lane, hitting the matatu.

Those injured were rushed to the hospital under critical condition with traffic along the road facing disruption for several minutes before the wreckage of the two vehicles was towed away.

Meanwhile, the traffic Police from Pap Onditi Police Station have launched investigations into the tragic accident. 

The police have since appealed to motorists to exercise caution on the roads to curb such incidents.

Merely two months into 2024, country roads leading to Kisumu have already seen a series of accidents claiming lives, raising concerns regarding their safety.

On January 29, a Super Metro bus from Kampala was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry in Ahero on the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway.

Preliminary reports indicated that the 17 people since confirmed killed in the accident included two women, 8 men and a teenage boy. A total of 53 passengers suffered injuries as a result of the accident, Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Allan Mwangi confirmed.

Three days prior, The Star Newspaper journalist Dickens Wasonga lost his life in a road crash in Mamboleo along the Kisumu-Kakamega road.

According to statistics by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), road accidents across the country have claimed 536 lives this year, which is an increase compared to deaths recorded during the same period in 2023 which stood at 537.

Pedestrians lead in fatalities with 216, compared with 163 recorded last year followed by passengers who recorded 109 deaths which is 11 more compared to the 98 recorded in 2023. In the statistics released recently, losing control was deemed the leading cause of road accidents in Kenya in 2023, leading to 929 fatalities.
