The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has advised Kenyans to be wary of 15 platforms and 10 phone numbers reportedly used to scam Kenyans making Standard Guage Railway (SGR) bookings.

The list released by KRC on Friday, February 2 includes four mobile applications created by fraudsters to impersonate the country's rail transport provider and dupe Kenyans with fake SGR services.

The apps listed include SGR Madaraka Express, SGR Madaraka Express Mobile, Madaraka Express-Online Book and Madaraka Express.

Kenyans were thus warned against downloading the apps on their phones and making transactions through those apps.

Furthermore, KRC maintained that all SGR booking is done through its official website.

Kenya Railways also exposed how fraudsters were expanding their bag of tricks to include information channels they use to spread misleading and unverified information to Kenyans on social media.

Some of them took advantage of Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) which accommodate gigantic numbers of users daily to spread misleading information through the platforms under the guise that little to no stern action would be taken against them.

On Facebook, those platforms include SGR-Madaraka Express Customer Service Call, SGR Forum-Madaraka Express, and Madaraka Express Customer Service.

Likewise, on X, Kenyans were warned against paying attention to the following accounts; @KenyaRailway, @_KenyaRailways_, @kenyarailwaykrc, @KenyaRailw39401, @KenyaRailwayske, @Kenyarailway_ke, @KenyaRailway and @KanyoRailways.

"We wish to inform the public that the above list of fake accounts and phone numbers have no association with Kenya Railways and are not authorized to disburse any information on behalf of the Corporation and carry out any transaction involving the selling/purchasing of tickets," read the notice in part.

"Please note that Kenya Railways' official pages and contacts are Kenya Railways on Facebook and @Kenya Railways on Twitter."

KRC also exposed 10 phone numbers claiming to offer SGR services to unsuspecting members of the public, most of which are personal numbers.

As such, Kenya Railways maintains that it communicates through the official numbers 0709907000709907555, and 0709388887.
