Former Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso was on Wednesday, March 29 named in a shortlist of 12 candidates for the position of the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service.

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) met for the exercise ahead of the interviews scheduled for April 4, 2023, at the Kenya School of Government.

The commission, led by Eliud Kinuthia, is in a race against time to replace Edward Mbugua who retired after attaining the mandatory retirement age.

Abdalla Komesha replaced Mbugua in an acting capacity as the recruitment process takes place. He also applied for the position and has made it to the shortlist.

Others shortlisted include David Birech, Rono Bunei, Vincent Makokha, Jecinta Muthoni, Maurice Kipkoech, Douglas Kanja and Rosemary Kuraru.

Judy Jebet, Nyale Munga and Tom Odera also made the shortlist. Three out of the 12 people shortlisted are women, making up 25 per cent.

Shioso is the former National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson. He is currently the Commandant of the National Police Service (NPS) College based in Kiganjo, Nyeri County.

David Rono Bunei is the North-Eastern region police commander. He has been instrumental in dealing with the Al-Shabaab menace that has plagued the North Eastern region for decades.

Jacinta Muthoni is an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG). She is the current Director of Reforms at the Kenya Police Service Headquarters with her office at Vigilance House, Nairobi.

The position attracted over 30 police officers as interested applicants. Those shortlisted were required to have a bachelor's degree, be a Kenyan citizen who must have served in the police service for at least 15 years and be of the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police.

The Deputy IG of Police is a powerful office which controls almost 70,000 personnel of the more than 100,000 officers under NPS. The other personnel are in the Administration Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The DIG KPS is in charge of all eight regional police commanders, 47 county commanders, formation commanders, Sub County Commanders, Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and all uniformed officers.

He also controls the General Service Unit (GSU), Traffic Department and Kenya Police College in Kiganjo.
