Relief is on the way for thousands of motorists battling daily traffic jams between Nairobi and Kiambu after the Cabinet approved the dualling of the 23.5-kilometre Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road.

The multi-billion-shilling project will transform the current two-lane highway into a dual carriageway, complete with new bypasses, loops, and access roads aimed at easing congestion and cutting travel times between the two counties.

According to the Cabinet in a statement released Tuesday, the revamped corridor will also feature non-motorised transport lanes and modern commuter facilities to make it safer and more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists — a major step towards sustainable urban mobility.

"Cabinet gave the green light to the dualling of the 23.5km Muthaiga-Kiambu-Ndumberi road to ease congestion and improve mobility between Nairobi and Kiambu counties," the dispatch read in part.

The road, which serves key suburbs such as Muthaiga, Runda, Ridgeways, and Kiambu Town, has long been a traffic nightmare, especially during rush hours when vehicles crawl bumper-to-bumper.

Officials said the upgrade is designed to address this chronic congestion while improving connectivity for commuters and businesses operating along the route.

The Cabinet further emphasized that the dualling project forms part of the government’s broader plan to modernize Nairobi’s metropolitan transport network under Kenya Vision 2030.

"The dualling is part of the government’s broader effort to modernise Nairobi’s metropolitan transport network in line with Kenya Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals on infrastructure and mobility," adds the dispatch.

Once completed, the expanded road is expected to ease pressure on the Thika Superhighway, improve trade and logistics between Nairobi and Kiambu, and enhance the overall commuter experience in the region.

Kiambu Road is one of the busiest commuter corridors linking Nairobi’s Muthaiga area to Kiambu Town and beyond. Stretching through rapidly developing suburbs like Runda, Ridgeways, and Thindigua, it serves thousands of motorists daily, including residents, traders, and corporate commuters.

The road is a key artery connecting Nairobi’s northern suburbs to Thika Road and Limuru Road, making it vital for both local and regional mobility.

The update comes just two weeks after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja announced a Ksh2.1 billion investment in the construction and rehabilitation of roads across all 17 sub-counties in the capital.

Speaking on October 25, Sakaja said the county, in collaboration with the national government, has already released Ksh867 million to fund road works in Embakasi East and Embakasi West.

Among the key projects under the initiative are Umoja One SDA Road, Kwa Maji Road, Umoja Rockfield Road, Tena Police Post Access Road, Bypass–Mihango Link Road, Aviation School–Fedha–Tassia–Nyayo Embakasi Road, Embakasi Road to Embakasi Village, Mihango Kajuju Road, Kibiku Muhuyu Road, and Komarock Estate Access Road.
