Detectives investigating the murder of a Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) cleric in Nakuru have linked the killing to a notorious armed gang previously profiled by investigators in 2022, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 12, the DCI disclosed that forensic and intelligence-led investigations had connected the murder of Reverend Julius Ndumia Ngari to a gang known for carrying out violent robberies while disguised in security forces uniforms.

According to investigators, the gang has been operating using an I.1AI firearm, which police reportedly recovered in 2024.

The cleric was killed on the night of Sunday, May 3, at PCEA Tabuga Church in Nakuru North Sub-County in an incident that sparked outrage among residents and church members.

The DCI now says detectives have uncovered fresh leads tying the same gang to another violent robbery that occurred on May 1, just days before the murder.

During that incident, attackers allegedly forced a victim to transfer Ksh600,000 from a bank account to mobile numbers associated with the criminal group.

Authorities added that investigators are probing whether the gang is behind a wider wave of violent robberies and attacks reported across Nakuru County and neighbouring areas in recent months.

“Detectives are also investigating a pattern of violent attacks and robberies within Nakuru County and its environs. It is suspected that the same gang is behind several of these incidents,” the DCI stated.

Investigators disclosed that advanced forensic examinations are still underway, including scientific analysis aimed at placing suspects at the murder scene as detectives seek to strengthen the case ahead of possible prosecutions.

The agency maintained that the probe remains active and pledged to pursue all those linked to the killing.

“The DCI reaffirms its commitment to a thorough, professional, and impartial investigation to ensure all those involved in this heinous crime are brought to justice,” the statement added.

The agency also urged Kenyans to avoid speculation surrounding the case and instead cooperate with investigators by sharing any information that could assist the probe.

Members of the public with information were asked to report to the nearest police station or use the #FichuaKwaDCI anonymous reporting channels.
