Kenya’s most iconic movie narrator, DJ Afro, is stepping into new territory, set to lend his unmistakable voice to a boxing ring for the first time as a live commentator during the highly anticipated Majembe versus Mbavu Destroyer amateur clash.

Comedian Oga Obina, one of the event’s main organisers, confirmed the development in an Instagram post shared on April 2.

The bout, dubbed Vurugu Fight Night, is slated for Saturday, April 4, at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, a venue capable of hosting thousands, with more than 2,000 tickets already up for grabs.

DJ Afro, born James Mwangi and also known as James Muigai or DJ Amingos, has built a cross-generational fanbase across Kenya and Tanzania.

He rose to prominence by dubbing and narrating international action, kung-fu, and Indian films in Swahili, Sheng, and Kikuyu, transforming foreign productions into content that feels distinctly Kenyan and highly entertaining.

His brilliance extended beyond translation. DJ Afro often reimagined entire plots using local slang and humor, recasting Hollywood and Bollywood characters into relatable figures that resonated with everyday audiences.

Catchphrases like "Pozi tena pozi kabisa" became embedded in daily speech, underscoring how deeply his work influenced a generation raised on his Video Compact Discs (VCDs) in neighborhood video halls.

Before the streaming era, his low-cost VCDs served as a primary gateway to entertainment for millions, with many young Kenyans saving lunch money just to catch a DJ Afro narration after school.

Beyond the commentary spectacle, the fight itself has drawn significant political interest, with prominent figures financially backing the viral amateur boxers.

President William Ruto pledged Ksh1 million to each fighter, totaling Ksh2 million in direct support, a commitment delivered publicly through Lang’ata Member of Parliament (MP) Jalang'o. Notably, the president emphasized that he backs both competitors.

Meanwhile, businessman Oketch Salah, linked to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, contributed Ksh200,000 in cash, while Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri reportedly escalated the stakes with a Ksh2 million pledge.

The showdown has also attracted dozens of brands eager to secure sponsorship deals. In a standout move, one sponsor unveiled a brand-new Toyota Noah as the grand prize for the winner after officially coming on board as a primary partner.

With DJ Afro on the mic, backing from top political players, and millions already poured into the event, the Majembe versus Mbavu Destroyer clash is shaping up to be one of Kenya’s most electrifying live spectacles this year.
