Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson, Wafula Chebukati was left out of the 41-person shortlist for the position of the Court of Appeal Judge.

Chief Justice Martha Koome who serves as the Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) released the shortlist on Tuesday, April 23, reduced by half from the 82 applications JSC had received for the prestigious position.

Of the applicants, some who made the 41 included former IEBC chairperson Issack Hassan and lawyer Katwa Kigen.

Also shortlisted included Justices Chacha Mwita, Anthony Mrima and Lady Justice Grace Nzioka.

Those who also failed to make the shortlist included former IEBC vice chair Lilian Mahiri Zaja, Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) chairperson Priscilla Nyokabi and Justice Nixon Sifuna.

"The JSC having reviewed the application for completeness and conformity with the requirements as set out in the advertisement, shortlisted 41 candidates," read the notice in part.

Owing to the public notice, Koome invited members of the public to avail any information of interest concerning the shortlisted candidates on or before May 13, 2024, at 5:00 pm.

JSC had on February 2, 2024, announced vacancies for 11 Court of Appeal judges who would serve until they attain the retirement age of 65 years (for early retirees) or 70 years as stipulated in the law.

Those appointed will receive a minimum wage of Ksh775,845, excluding benefits and a maximum of Ksh1.18 million.

Koome, Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya, for and on behalf of the Judiciary of Kenya, declare vacancies in the Office of Judge of the Court of Appeal of the Republic of Kenya," read part of the gazette notice.

Among the statutory requirements for the application include a law degree from a recognised university and at least ten 10 years experience as a superior court judge or an alternative of at least ten 10 years experience as a distinguished academic, or legal practitioner.

Chebukati ascended to the position of IEBC Chairperson in 2017 and left shortly after overseeing the 2022 General Election.
