Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday, June 26 issued shoot to kill orders to police officers targeting anyone daring to storm a police station.
While inspecting several police stations in Kiambu County following the Gen Z memorial protests held on Wednesday, June 25, Murkomen told residents that he had directed police officers to open fire on anyone attempting to storm police stations with malicious intent.
“Ile shida inafanya saa zingine polisi wapige wakora risasi ni kwa sababu wanashikwa, wanaenda alafu wanarudi kuchekelea polisi wakisema sasa tulifika wapi, hakuna kwenye tulienda. Na tumeambia polisi, mtu yeyote ambaye atakaribia police station, piga yeye risasi,” Murkomen said.

Translated to mean "The problem sometimes that makes police officers shoot criminals is that they get arrested, released from custody and come back to mock the police asking 'Where did you take us, there's no place we went to.' We have instructed the police that anyone who comes near a police station, shoot them."
The CS decried the widespread destruction witnessed in Nairobi and Kiambu counties following Wednesday’s protests, describing the scenes of the affected areas he toured as deeply disturbing.
At the Dagoretti Police Post, he said criminals posing as protesters targeted the armoury, managing to steal ammunition and police uniforms. The attackers also set ablaze six vehicles belonging to private owners and the county government.
Similar incidents were reported at the Ruthimitu Chief’s Office in Dagoretti South, the Kikuyu Deputy County Commissioner’s Office, the Kikuyu National Registration Bureau offices, and the Kikuyu Law Courts, where property worth millions of shillings was torched, vandalized, or destroyed.
"The government has launched a manhunt to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice," he added in a separate statement.
Murkomen's controversial order comes as Ndunyu Njeru Police Station in Kinangop, Nyandarua County, went up in flames on the evening of Thursday, June 26, after enraged residents torched the facility following the fatal shooting of a man by a police officer.
The victim, reportedly a boda boda rider, was among locals demonstrating against rampant cattle theft in the area. According to reports, three suspects linked to the cattle theft had been detained at the station, and fearing they might be released, the residents stormed the premises to demand accountability.
Footage reviewed by Viral Tea showed the police station engulfed in flames as crowds watched from afar, some breaking into victory songs and cheers.
Beforehand, CS Murkomen alleged that the June 25 demonstrations on Wednesday were not peaceful but an attempted form of terrorism and coup to overthrow President William Ruto's administration, further attributing the looting and destruction of property across the country during the protests to hired goons.
