CS Murkomen: June 25 Protests Were Attempted Terrorist Attack, Coup

Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has alleged that the June 25 demonstrations on Wednesday were not peaceful but an attempted form of terrorism and coup to overthrow President William Ruto's administration.
Murkomen was speaking on Thursday, June 26, during a press briefing where he attributed the looting and destruction of property across the country during the protests to hired goons.
"This was not just violence. It was an orchestrated campaign of terror, an assault on our people, our Constitution, our institutions, our values, and the very soul of this Republic. What was billed as a peaceful protest was, in truth, a calculated disguise, a coordinated descent into chaos masked as civic expression," he stated in part.

"Beneath the banner of democratic rights, we witnessed a well-orchestrated campaign of political violence. What happened was not spontaneous. It was not random. It was deliberate. It was coordinated. It was funded. It was premeditated. And politically instigated."
The CS also alleged that the mobilised protestors along Kiambu and Thika roads were chanting "it is time to take over power" and "occupy State House".
"There was no peaceful demonstration. It was riots, chaos and anarchy, and therefore we condemn the criminal anarchists in the name of peaceful demonstrations, who unleashed a wave of violence, looting, sexual assault and destruction upon our people," Murkomen said.
"That was not a protest; it was an unconstitutional attempt to change the regime of this republic, and yesterday the police tried to foil an attempted coup."
Murkomen stated in his speech that hired criminals had targeted police officers, aiming to seize weapons from armouries and steal police uniforms. He said the attackers successfully made away with firearms from two police stations in Kiambu County.
He also revealed that several government offices—including courts, national and county offices—were ransacked and set ablaze. Additionally, he noted that businesses suffered extensive looting, resulting in losses worth billions of shillings.
"The criminals targeted kiosks, supermarkets, electronic shops, hotels and restaurants. Business and residential premises were burnt, including one owned by the Catholic Church in Embu County," he revealed.
Murkomen expressed deep concern over the targeted attacks on properties belonging to government-aligned elected leaders, specifically mentioning Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and Molo MP Kimani Kuria.
During his press briefing, the Cabinet Secretary firmly dismissed claims that the protests were spontaneous or unplanned. Instead, he described them as a highly organised, well-funded, premeditated, and politically driven rebellion.
To prevent such incidents from happening again, Murkomen stated that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had already launched investigations aimed at identifying and arresting the protest organisers and financiers.
