Chilling details have emerged concerning the demonstrations in Nairobi on Tuesday, June 17, with goons allegedly instructed to target and gravely harm women participating in the peaceful protests to cause public outrage and force the government to impose a ban on future protests.

This was revealed on Thursday, June 19, by Kenyan investigative journalist Dennis Okari, who disclosed that a source had intimated to him that the goons hired to counter the protesters had specific instructions as well as tools they would use to cause mayhem and destruction, making it easy for politicians to pin the blame on the protesters.

Okari, who spoke during a show on Spice FM, revealed that the most chilling thing he was informed of was a deliberate plan to target and stab a few women in the Central Business District (CBD), something that would trigger national outrage similar to what happened in the wake of femicide cases across the country.

"A source told me that Tuesday's protests, and including future protests, the plan was that there are groups that had been identified and each group had a role and tools that they were going to use in these protests, but what was the scariest thing I heard is the plan was 'try and stab a few women in town' because the effect of stabbing a man is different from the effect of stabbing a woman," he revealed.

According to Okari, this would give politicians opposed to the protests verbal ammunition to use against those in favour of the protests, claiming infiltration by criminal elements and giving authorities concrete reasons to ban them in the future.

"You'd draw public outrage when now the calls are 'see what these protests are doing to our women, to our mothers on the streets'. So blame it on the protesters that look, there are criminal outfits that have infiltrated these protests and therefore, the more reason to ban them and so the plan was they were going to get into the city, beat up people, stab and the target was specifically stab one or two or three to make the headlines," he added.

For most of Tuesday, the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) was engulfed in tension as suspected hired goons launched attacks on protesters calling for justice over the death of teacher and social media influencer Albert Ojwang.

The assailants, armed with crude weapons such as knives and clubs, targeted both demonstrators and unsuspecting civilians, stealing handbags, phones, and other valuables.

Okari's account was corroborated by Spice FM host Dennis Aseto, who revealed that one of the female guests on her way to Standard Group Limited's headquarters for a KTN interview was attacked by one of the goons she confronted. In another account, a woman who was trying to cross a road in the city was chased by goons who beat her up and stole from her.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Hawkers Association Secretary General Francis Gachanja revealed on Thursday in yet another chilling narrative that goons armed with batons were deployed to beat protestors while uniformed police officers stood by and even aided them.

Gachanja said the groups carrying batons and riding on motorbikes marched into the streets chanting anti-protest slogans like "There shall be no demonstrations." At first, they were thought to be fellow protestors, but it quickly became evident they had a different agenda when they started attacking scattered groups of demonstrators.

“They were not just walking and chanting. The moment they spotted protesters, they beat them up and chased them with those batons. And no one stopped them, not even the police,” Gachanja narrated, adding, “We saw uniformed officers walking beside them. At one point, I witnessed police handing over tear gas canisters to these goons."

His remarks echoed those of Amnesty International Executive Director Houghton Irungu, who claimed that some boda boda riders were reportedly paid to take part in Tuesday’s protests. According to Irungu, the payments ranged between Ksh200 and Ksh1,000.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Seda has since denied the allegations that police officers colluded with the hired goons. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration, strongly condemned the violence, alleging that the goons operating in the CBD were acting under instructions from a government official.

Several Kenyans had linked Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to the sponsoring of goons. However, the county boss denied the allegations and condemned the act by club-wielding goons to destroy property and rob Kenyans, claiming the goons had originated from outside the capital city.

His denial was despite a viral video showing club-wielding men passing outside Governor Sakaja's office shouting, "We protected the city, Sakaja". The alleged goons, believed to have been ferried by motorbikes into the city to stop the protests, could be heard chanting in support of Sakaja, leading some to believe that the governor was connected to the goons.

On Tuesday, young Kenyans took to the streets to protest the death of Ojwang while in police custody. The demonstrations began peacefully, with protesters marching through Nairobi’s CBD, but things took a turn when chaos broke out and hired goons hijacked the protest, looting shops and robbing people in the area.
