Former President Uhuru Kenyatta took another swipe at leaders in President William Ruto's government, moments after he slammed his successor for blaming him whenever they failed to meet their campaign promises.

Speaking during a roadside rally with residents in Mwingi, Kitui County, Uhuru urged leaders to prioritise the interests of ordinary Kenyans over their own interests.

"Kazi ya kiongozi sio kujitetea tumbo yake. Kazi ya kiongozi ni kutetea maslahi ya mwananchi wa kawaida. Na pahali ambapo tunakosea ni wakati viongozi wanajitetea tumbo zao, wakati viongozi wanatumia vyeo kujitetea wenyewe," he said.

Which can be loosely translated to "The work of a leader is not to defend his own interests but to defend the interests of the ordinary Kenyan. Where we are going wrong is when leaders are looking after their stomachs and using qualifications to defend themselves."

Earlier, Uhuru called on other politicians to prioritise the needs of Kenyan citizens before their own, as that is what they have been elected to do.

Speaking at a church fundraiser in Mwingi on Sunday, November 19, the former Head of State similarly claimed that he and some opposition leaders had received threats and blame directed at them by sections of government allies despite not playing a part in formulating any of its existing policies.

"I do not want to say much, not because I fear, I stopped fearing. We have been threatened and told a lot of things. Each time someone fails in their mandate, they blame the previous government. I am used to the blame and life continues," he told the enthusiastic congregation.

“Tomorrow when women fail to give birth they will say ‘you know Uhuru did it’. I don’t know, but I am used to it."

CS Kuria Hits Back At Uhuru for Criticising Ruto Govt

Meanwhile, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria insisted that Uhuru left behind a dilapidated economy when he handed over power to Ruto in September 2022.

"My response to Uhuru Kenyatta. Every day, the full magnitude of the mess you left behind is dawning on us. We are not complaining. We will continue to clean the mess. We can do so when you are quiet. Better," he fired off.

"You thought the economy would collapse by December 2023 as you have told your friends repeatedly. Now that it's clear we have navigated your murky waters, you are all over again."

He also slammed Uhuru for expecting former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, to lead demonstrations over the torrid state of the economy in Kenya.

"You are not happy that Raila has refused your contract to cause violence. You conned him that you would make him President then fired all your experienced campaign managers.

"You lied to the old man. And now you want to manage him again by saying you are in Azimio to stay," he concluded.
