Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has maintained that he belongs to the Azimio la Umoja coalition while taking a swipe at President William Ruto's administration.

Speaking at a church fundraiser in Mwingi on Sunday, November 19, the former Head of State censured his successor for blaming him every time his administration failed to meet its promises.

Refusing to hold back his words, Uhuru claimed that he and some opposition leaders had received threats and blame directed at them by sections of government allies despite not playing a part in formulating any of its existing policies.

However, Uhuru, whose deputy was Ruto during the two terms of his administration, revealed that he had grown immune to the threats and blame games even for flimsy matters.

"I do not want to say much, not because I fear, I stopped fearing. We have been threatened and told a lot of things. Each time someone fails in their mandate, they blame the previous government. I am used to the blame and life continues," he told the enthusiastic congregation.

“Tomorrow when women fail to give birth they will say ‘you know Uhuru did it’. I don’t know, but I am used to it."

He further asserted that he was not misleading his followers when he stated his position in Azimio, led by former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga.

"I am not a conman. I always tell people I am an Azimio member and that is where I belong. My stand has not changed. You should be a politician with a stand who can always be trusted."

Uhuru, who was in the company of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, called on other politicians to prioritise the needs of Kenyan citizens before their own, as that is what they have been elected to do.

"Let us not allow politics to divide us. Everyone has an opportunity to contribute to the growth of the nation and end poverty," he stated.

"For servant leadership, we are in the positions that we are in and God has given us those positions not for ourselves but to serve others."

Since handing over the instruments of power to President Ruto in September 2022, Uhuru has largely kept off the public eye and mainly focused on his role of restoring peace in DRC.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Kwanza government has blamed Uhuru’s regime for the economic hardships facing Kenya today, attributing the current high cost of living to the former president’s failure.

Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua have been on the record saying heavy borrowing and subsidies during Uhuru’s tenure plunged the country into an economic crisis.

''We were in a situation where we were deep in debt and did not have a programme to get us out of the mess... We have made sure that we have stopped borrowing, left, centre and right,'' Ruto said at Sagana State Lodge on August 6, 2023.

Recently, Gachagua and Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen blamed Uhuru for the infrastructural challenges experienced at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

This came in the wake of the airport experiencing several power blackouts grounding all operations and a roof that was seen leaking, issues that Kenya Kwanza claimed were a result of substandard projects by the Jubilee government.

“When we got into the office we found that the projects in the previous regime were substandard.

"When the renovation was done on Terminal 1C and E, it was in a hurry and temporary because there needed to be set up an in-field project which was costlyBut we have spoken to the contractors to redo the job” Murkomen revealed on Tuesday, November 14.
