They also decried delayed response by the Nairobi County Government's fire department, with eyewitnesses stating that the fire engines, arrived one hour late and the vehicles were equipped with only half a tank of water.

By daybreak, the fire had already left a trail of destruction on Mutindwa Market and encroached on KAG Church.

Another round of fire engines and rescue teams rushed to the scene, hoping to contain the spreading blaze and salvage what remained.

Esther Passaris, the Nairobi Woman Representative, was one of the first leaders who implored the Nairobi County government to take action.

She also urged Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria to help the traders get back on their feet after losing their source of income.

"We have barely dealt with Toi Market, and now this? It is time to crack the whip on arsonists. Governor Johnson Sakaja, let us empower market leaders and traders on preparedness," Passaris urged.

The fire came days after over 2,500 traders at Toi market in Kibra, Nairobi county on Sunday, June 11 counted losses after their stalls were destroyed by a fire that broke out in the early morning hours.

In its aftermath, Nairobi Governor, Johnson Sakaja had promised Nairobi residents that his administration would get to the bottom of the fire incidents by promising to decentralise firefighters and purchase more engine trucks.

"We have assessed the damage and we will help you rebuild. The county government is going to rebuild the market with more space for emergency vehicles to access the market in case of such emergencies," the governor stated.
