Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Rashid Mohammed has been suspended from office following a dramatic resolution by members of the FKF National Executive Committee (NEC) over allegations of financial impropriety and governance breaches.

In a decision issued on April 24, 2026, NEC members directed that Mohammed steps aside immediately to pave the way for investigations into alleged misuse of public funds, including claims of irregular spending linked to accounts meant for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) amounting to approximately Ksh 42 million.

The resolution also targets FKF Acting General Secretary Dennis Gicheru and NEC member Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim, who have similarly been directed to vacate their positions pending ongoing probes by relevant FKF bodies, state agencies, and international football authorities.

“With immediate effect, Mr Hussein Rashid Mohammed do step aside from his role and position as President of Football Kenya Federation, Mr Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim do step aside from his role as nominated member of Football Kenya Federation National Executive Member and Mr Dennis Gicheru will step aside from his position and role as the Acting General Secretary of FKF,” read part of the resolutions signed by 9 of the 14 NEC members.

“This is to allow for investigations by relevant FKF, national and international bodies into alleged financial impropriety of public funds and resources, and other statutory breaches.”

At the centre of the shake-up, NEC members cited what they described as “systematic exclusion and sidelining” of a majority of executive members from FKF operations, arguing it goes against the federation’s constitution and undermines accountability structures.

The committee also raised concerns over alleged breaches of Kenya’s public finance and procurement laws, pointing to non-competitive procurement practices and possible conflicts of interest within the federation’s leadership.

In a major leadership shift, FKF Vice President Macdonald Mariga Wanyama has been appointed to take over as Acting President with immediate effect. He is expected to convene an urgent NEC meeting to steer the federation through the transition period.

NEC members further resolved that all FKF bank accounts—whether held directly under the federation or linked to signatories acting in official capacity—be frozen immediately to safeguard funds and preserve audit trails.

The move is also aimed at allowing independent forensic auditors to scrutinize FKF’s financial operations, procurement processes, and governance structures as part of a broader clean-up effort.

The investigation is largely focused on the suspected loss of about Ksh42 million from CHAN-linked accounts, sparking fresh questions over how funds associated with the continental tournament were handled.

Under pressure, Mohammed on Thursday dismissed claims tied to the contested Ksh42.4 million insurance payment, framing them as a calculated attempt to tarnish his name. “Once I started the process of cleaning house, it was inevitable that corruption would fight back,” he said.

“Through such a malicious campaign, a lifetime of sacrifice, dedication, and investment to help develop our social fabric through sports can go up in smoke, just like that. Reputation ruined forever. I shall not allow it.”
