Abdallah Komesha, who was serving as the Deputy Inspector General in an acting capacity, has been assigned a new role hours after President William Ruto appointed Douglas Kanja Kirocho, as the new Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service.

In a series of changes announced by the National Police Service (NPS) on Wednesday, April 12, Komesha was appointed the new Director of the Directorate of Investigations (DCI) Investigations Bureau

Former Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso was appointed as the Director General of the Kenya Coast Guard Service and will serve for a period of four years.

He was replaced by Nyale Munga as the Commandant National Police College-Main Campus Kiganjo, who will be deputized by Esther Mwangi.

Jacinta Muthoni has been appointed the Director of Personnel at the KPS, and Rosemary Kuraru appointed the new Director of Human Capital Development and Administration for the NPS. 

Moreover, Jostine Barmao was appointed the Director of Gender and Children's Affairs at NPS.

Ranson Lolmodoni moved from the GSU and was appointed as the new Director of Operations at the KPS.

Komesha was appointed by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) to serve as acting DIG after Edward Mbugua who retired after attaining the mandatory retirement age.

Mbugua hit the 60-year retirement age in 2020 but his contract was extended and was to end in July 2023. He thanked the NPS officers across the country for the support that they accorded him during his tenure.

Until his appointment, Komesha, a career detective, was the Principal Assistant to the Inspector General-NPS.

The NPSC thereafter published an advertisement in the local dailies seeking to replace Mbugua, with the role attracting over 30 police officers as interested applicants, including Komesha.

The Deputy IG of Police is a powerful office which controls almost 70,000 personnel of the more than 100,000 officers under NPS. The other personnel are in the Administration Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The DIG KPS is in charge of all eight regional police commanders, 47 county commanders, formation commanders, Sub County Commanders, Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and all uniformed officers.
