Athletics Kenya (AK) has announced the death of legendary marathoner, Henry Rono.

In a statement on Thursday, February 15, AK revealed that the former athlete died this morning while receiving treatment at the Nairobi South Hospital.

"Athletics Kenya is saddened to announce and notify the public of the demise of former Athlete Mr Henry Rono which occurred today at 10.30 am.

"He had been hospitalized at the Nairobi South Hospital for the past 10 days," the statement read in part.

AK praised Rono as a Kenyan retired track and field athlete who specialized in various long-distance running events.

He is remembered as the former record holder for the 3000-metre steeplechase for over a decade.

In 1978, Rono produced one of the greatest performances in athletics history, breaking four world records in 81 days.

Rono also ran 27:22.50 to smash the existing 10,000m world record in an event staged in Vienna, Austria in the same year.

A further addition to his accolades included his stint in the United States where he worked as an athletics coach, managing to produce a team of successful athletes.

"On behalf of Athletics Kenya Executive Committee and athletics fraternity, we wish to convey our sincere heartfelt condolence to his family, friends, and the entire athletics fraternity during this trying moment. May his soul rest in eternal peace," concluded the statement.

Rono's death came days after the world was stunned by overnight news that world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum died in a gruesome road accident in the Kaptagat area along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine Road alongside his coach, Gervais Hakizimana.

Burial preparations for the late Kiptum have begun with the organising committee indicating that the late athlete will be interred at this home on Saturday, February 24.

The Cabinet on Wednesday announced that Kiptum would be accorded a State funeral to honour his exceptional achievements.
