Celebrated sports radio presenter, Fred Arocho, on Monday, April 3 opened up on his motivation to leave Radio Africa Group's Radio Jambo for the newly-launched Radio 47 station under Cape Media.

Speaking to digital creators at the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), Arocho explained that his departure was motivated by the need for growth and new challenges, adding that staying in one place for too long leads to redundancy.

He praised Radio Jambo for giving him 14 years to grow himself as a sports personality, but it was the hefty package that drew him to Radio 47, which he could not resist.

"I was being paid well at Radio Jambo but Radio 47 increased the package and now it feels the efforts I have put in for all the time I have been on radio are finally paying off," Arocho explained.

Despite not revealing the exact details of the new package, Arocho hinted at the newcomer paying him above half a million shillings, putting it between Ksh500,000 and Ksh1 million, an increase from his previous earnings at Radio Jambo and something he attributed to his hard work and dedication.

In conclusion, Arocho thanked his fans and former management at Radio Africa for the support they accorded him.

"I really thank Radio Africa which has employed me for the 14 years I have been on Radio, I began at Milele before I joined Radio Jambo. To my fans who make me who I am, thank you very much for the unwavering support," he said.

At Radio 47, Arocho will continue with his sports commentary niche, which has been his passion for many years. He will pair up with seasoned presenter Hassan Mwana wa Ali, who left Radio Maisha for the Cape Media-owned station.

He will host two sports shows on Saturdays and Sundays. The move to Radio 47 presents an opportunity for Arocho to broaden his horizons and further develop his skills in sports commentary.

Radio 47, despite being weeks old, has been on a relentless hunt for top talent from rival media houses, with the biggest casualty being Radio Maisha, under the Standard Media Group (SMG), which has been for long battling financial woes and losing talent in form of journalists. Since announcing its plans to trim its payroll, SMG has been turned into a poaching ground for its competition.

Radio 47 will also hope to replicate the success of TV47, which stabilized barely three years after being launched, making it one of the fastest-growing TV stations in Kenya.

With the Kiswahili proposition, Radio 47 sets itself against the big boys in the industry and hopes to send its competition back to the drawing board. It will also provide job opportunities for journalists, presenters and other technical crew.
