Fwaro Makokha Robinson, who emerged top with 431 marks alongside Otieno Lewis Omondi Glen in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams has become the second candidate to be surprised with a full secondary school scholarship.

Software company Kodris Africa on Thursday, December 22 awarded Makokha the scholarship following his exemplary efforts in the national examinations. He had expressed in a recent interview that he wants to be a software engineer in the future.

The scholarship includes entire school fees costs, coding licenses and the relevant tools, including a laptop for the four years he will be in school.

Makokha will also get an opportunity to learn to code, a major skill offered by Kodris. The coding platform covers learners from Grade One to Grade 12 (Form One to Form Four) and is approved by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development as curriculum support material.

“We saw on the news that Fwaro would like to become a software engineer. The skill that takes him there is coding, and we want to set him on a firm footing towards achieving his dreams. Coding is one of the most sought-after skills in the world today, and Fwaro is setting the pace,” Kodris CEO Mugumo Munene said in a press statement.

Kodris Africa is a platform established to teach primary and secondary school students how to code. It has partnered with a local telco and bank to allow parents to purchase coding licenses for their children.

A license contains a year’s worth of coding lessons and includes learning materials.

In an interview with Citizen TV on Wednesday, December 21, hours after he was revealed to be the top student out of 1,244,188 candidates who sat for the examinations. Makokha revealed that being the top student in the country was something unexpected for him.

"No, I had not expected to be the top student as the results came out suddenly. I had expected to be amongst the top 10 but being the top in the whole of Kenya, I had not expected it completely but the results have been received with joy by my family and the entire school and on my part, I'm very happy.

"When I was doing my internal exams, I used to come out as number one, two, three around there so I had to maintain it so I had no worries of being in the top 10 but to be the top is something I had not expected," he said.

He added that he scored 425 marks on the last exam prior to the KCPE examinations, meaning his 431 marks were an improvement.

Makokha expressed his excitement as well as that of his family, including his parents following the release of the results by Education CS, Ezekiel Machogu.

Regarding the tips he used to pass the exams, he added that he used to pay a lot of attention since he and his fellow classmates knew they had very little time left in school, thus he had to be attentive and listen to the teachers and fellow pupils regarding what they would be tested on in the exams.

"I was attentive in my capacity and it was important to work together with the teachers...I would like to tell those who didn't get their results that it is not the end of the road and that there are a lot of opportunities to improve, and they should also keep working hard as well as putting God first in their prayers and they will succeed," he encouraged.

His fellow top candidate, Otieno Lewis Omondi Glen, will have his high school education sponsored by the Kakamega County government.
