Rigathi Gachagua's Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has slammed the Senate for declaring nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba’s seat vacant.

In a statement released on Thursday, May 22, DCP criticised the Senate’s decision, terming it rushed and arguing that it disregarded an existing court order that had halted Orwoba’s removal.

Orwoba, who was nominated to the Senate by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), landed in trouble after aligning herself with Fred Matiang’i’s political events in Kisii and Nyamira.

Her involvement was seen as a betrayal of UDA, which led to her expulsion from the party and the eventual declaration of her Senate seat as vacant.

"The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is the true embodiment of democratic values in Kenya. While parties like UDA claim to stand for democracy, their actions prove otherwise. DCP doesn’t just carry the word democracy in its name—we live it, we practice it, and we protect it," read the statement in part.

"The recent expulsion of Senator Gloria Orwoba by UDA is a clear sign of growing political intolerance. What were her so-called crimes? First, she attended a cultural event in her home county, Kisii, where leaders from across the political divide—including ODM’s Simba Arati—gathered to welcome Hon. Fred Matiang’i. This was a show of unity, not division."

The party also backed her efforts to hold Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua accountable over Kenyans who were scammed through fake overseas job offers.

DCP affirmed its full support for Senator Orwoba and vowed to keep standing up for every Kenyan’s right to voice their concerns and engage in national issues.

Just a day earlier, on May 21, the High Court in Nairobi blocked the UDA’s move to expel Senator Orwoba. Justice Lawrence Mugambi ruled that both her expulsion and the plan to replace her should be put on hold until the case is fully resolved.

However, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi went ahead and declared her seat vacant. In a gazette notice dated May 21, he stated the position was immediately open, clearing the way for UDA to start picking her replacement.

"The Senate Speaker’s rush to declare her seat vacant, even while a court order was in place, is a dangerous signal of the shrinking democratic space under President Ruto’s leadership.

"Senator Gloria Orwoba has been a fearless voice for girls' rights, justice, and human dignity. She is not alone—DCP stands with her. We will continue to defend every Kenyan’s right to speak, question, and participate without fear," assured DCP.
