The government has announced that Kenyans making payments to the Affordable Housing Program spearheaded by President William Ruto will now make use of the paybill number 222222.

In a statement on Monday, December 18, the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development revealed that the move was in line with President Ruto's directive to digitize all government services.

As a result, the initial paybill number 005500 that was used to make contributions to the program will cease to exist.

“In line with His Excellency The President's directive to onboard Government services to a single digital payment platform, paybill number 222222, and as communicated in Gazette Vol. CXXIV-No. 287 Gazette Notice No. 16008, we wish to notify our esteemed Boma Yangu members and members of the public that we will migrate payments for the Affordable Housing Program from paybill number 005500 to the designated paybill number 222222,” read the statement in part.

Through the new payment model, Kenyans making savings to the program will be required to enter the 222222 paybill number while the account number will be the name BOMA followed by the individual's ID number.

“For direct-to-paybill savings, the applicable account number will be BOMA followed by the member's ID Number (e.g. Paybill No. 222222, Account No: BOMΑ12345678),” the Ministry demonstrated.

The Affordable Housing Program is the latest government service to heed the Executive's demands of having all government services digitized.

On Sunday, December 10, the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) announced that all members of the public and employers will make their payments for services through the unified paybill number with immediate effect.

NHIF was among 17 state agencies whose CEOs were summoned by the government on Wednesday, November 8 for failing to comply with President William Ruto's order regarding payment of government services through eCitizen.

On Monday, August 7, the government acted on President Ruto's directive on Friday, June 30 and shut down the over 1,400 pay bills in a move geared at consolidating all payments to one channel.

"There is a dedicated government pay channel, 222222. The expectation of the government is that all government revenue must now use the pay channel so that the Treasury can have sight of every government service that is paid for.

"I am going to be making an announcement here that in the next 90 days, all other pay bills must be shut down because we have a problem with some of the PayBills that we cannot account for. We have close to over 1,000 PayBills some of which we don't have sight of. They must now be closed," he announced at the time.

All government services now have until December 31, 2023, to move their payment methods to the singular channel.
