President William Ruto on Thursday, June 13 urged Members of Parliament to pass the proposed 2024/2025 financial year budget with urgency.

Speaking in Meru County, the Head of State revealed that the government would embark on connecting Kenyans to electricity once the budget has been approved in the National Assembly.

"These honourable members, please hurry and pass the budget quickly. These farmers want electricity, these citizens want electricity," said Ruto.

He outlined how the 2023/24 budget was focused on stabilizing the economy, growing the agricultural sector, and fixing the education sector.

Ruto promised that the 2024/25 budget will be focused on development projects, including electricity and water connections.

“Last year was about stabilizing the economy, setting up agriculture properly, and fixing the education system for our children. This year is about connecting electricity, building roads, and providing water. We have already included this plan in our budget,” Ruto stated.

Meanwhile, Ruto's Cabinet revealed that  the proposed 2024/25 budget seeks to reduce government borrowing to fund the budget.

According to a despatch, the Cabinet mentioned that the budget had reduced the deficit by nearly 50 percent from Ksh1 trillion in the financial year 2021/22, Ksh925 billion in 2023/2024 to ksh597 million in the financial year 2024/2025.

"In line with the Administration's fiscal consolidation strategy, which seeks to reduce government borrowing, and in pursuit of the aspiration to achieve a balanced budget by 2027, the proposed budget consolidates these efforts by reducing the budget deficit by nearly 50%," read the dispatch in part.

"This is realized through the reduction of the deficit from Ksh1 trillion in FY 2021/22, Ksh925 billion in FY 2023/24 to Ksh597 billion in FY 2024/25."

Meanwhile, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung'u expressed confidence that Kenya is on the right track ahead of the budget reading.

"The budget outlines the available resources because everyone is focusing on that aspect. What measures are in place to raise resources? Ultimately, it's about looking at revenue-raising measures alongside policies and programs," Ndung'u stated.

He further noted, "For instance, the economic growth for 2023 was 5.6%, and as of April, inflation has decreased to 5%. These figures provide strong evidence that economic recovery has been underway since the latter part of 2023."

Ndung'u made these remarks during a media briefing at his office, underscoring the positive trajectory in Kenya's economic indicators as the nation prepares for the budget announcement at 3.00 pm.
