Political activist Morara Kebaso on Monday, February 10 criticised incidents whereby coffins were delivered to his home and office in the dead of night over the weekend.

Taking to X, the vocal lawyer exposed CCTV footage showing a bodaboda rider dropping a white coffin laden with black marks, outside his home in Ruiru and leaving in a panicked rush.

He claimed that politicians whom he did not name had corrupted the boda boda sector, where Kenya's youth have found solace amidst the unemployment crisis in the country, resorting to intimidation tactics using boda boda riders instead of focusing on creating a positive impact among the youth, that includes creating jobs.

"The youth of Kenya have no decent employment. They have opted for bodaboda to earn a living. Now you useless politicians are using them to deliver coffins. Instead of creating opportunities," he wrote.

"Allow my home and my place of work to be a place where I find peace. Deliver your promises to the people instead of delivering coffins to my home in Ruiru and my office in Utawala."

In another post, Morara hit out at the state of the coffins, claiming they were poorly designed. While decrying that he was not afraid of death threats, he advised the perpetrators to reach out to him for better-designed coffins.

"Whoever dropped this coffin at my gate on Saturday midnight, I just want to let you know that I am not afraid of death threats. Please contact Morara Home Furniture for a better coffin with good finishing," he stated in another post.

On October 21, 2024, Morara claimed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Special Service Unit (SSU) which was disbanded by President William Ruto was resurfacing with the sole purpose of tracking him down with the intent to kill him.

Morara gave his account of what transpired in Narok after his tour went sour and resulted in injuries to some of his team members. He had announced a tour to conduct civic education on Sunday, October 20 during the Mashujaa Day celebrations.

Speaking in a video uploaded on his social media platforms, the activist claimed that a team of flying squad officers had been dispatched from Narok to track him down and eliminate him.

"Right now my life is in danger because there is a team of flying squad officers that has been dispatched from Narok and the county commander knows this. There's a team of these flying squad officers that have been dispatched from Narok to look for me, to track me down and maybe shoot or whatever it is that they have been told to do.

“I also know that there is a team that has been formed under the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) called the Special Service Unit whose particular purpose is to track me down and kill me,” he revealed.

Morara went on to reveal that some spies had even gone to the extent of shopping for houses around his residence to monitor him and plot ways to get rid of him.

Point to note: SSU was disbanded in 2022 and all officers serving in the disbanded unit were recalled to DCI Headquarters for further instructions. The investigative agency noted that the move was part of changes in the National Police Service (NPS) under President Ruto's administration. It was formed on December 31, 2019, after the Flying Squad was disbanded by the former director of DCI, George Kinoti.

However, and not too long ago, Human Rights Watch (HRW) remarked on the recent surge in abductions and enforced disappearances of Kenyan citizens as well as those from neighbouring countries. On January 16, 2025, the group attributed them to a shadowy government-linked special squad, reminiscent of the disbanded SSU under the previous regime.

The activists alleged that this unit, known as the Operation Support Unit (OSU), has been behind a series of kidnappings and disappearances.
