The fifth edition of The Butterfly Effect (TBE), wings its way into the Kenyan revelling scene at the Jockey Club of Kenya, Ngong Road, on March 23, 2024, with a promise of an even better musical experience geared towards celebrating women in arts.

Headlining the event that will be starting on Saturday from 2 pm to Sunday at 2 am is renowned Kenyan R&B artist, Karun, currently making waves in the nascent but growing alternative music scene.

She will be playing alongside the talented musical band. Other supporting artists are female DJs Tina Ardor, Ms Bune, Mumbe and Jirani, and TBE’s in-house DJs.

TBE, which comprises an urban fusion of sounds has witnessed a steady rise in its fan base over the last four editions held since May 2023.

This first edition of 2024 takes a different approach combining a daytime and night extravaganza, allowing attendees to maximize the well-curated fusion of experiences such as games and a pop-up market.

According to founding member Andrew A. Njuguna (DJ Panik), the TBE musical experience is heavily tasked with breaking stereotypes around alternative sounds in Kenya.

“The typical mindset is often boxed into specific genres and not exploratory of the positive vibes that different sounds provide. Most shows tend to be single genre, that no longer take people through a musical journey,” says Njuguna.

Locally, urban fusion that borrows from various genres to create a modern sound, is slowly taking shape. With influence from diverse traditional genres, urban fusion helps to bridge the gap between different cultures and backgrounds giving it the unique diversity appeal as a music genre.

“Plans are underway to have a quarterly cadence to explore different styles of TBE to close the gap between international and local acts thus amplifying the wealth of local talent present in Kenya,” added Njuguna.

With the upcoming fifth edition, TBE continues to present opportunities that can be explored in further popularizing urban fusion, with a long-term goal to create Kenyan music in identity but goes beyond local boundaries to appeal to a wider audience.

In addition, the TBE musical experience seeks to provide an avenue where musical events tie into productive community engagements and social initiatives.

Proceeds from the event will be directed to partners, Heels for Pads, which seeks to raise awareness of period poverty while advancing gender equality and equity through menstrual health education workshops and access to sanitary pads.
