Chaotic scenes were witnessed on Friday, March 22 after National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya supporters staged a dramatic clash that brought events surrounding a funeral in Goseta, Trans Nzoia County to a halt.

A video seen by Viral Tea showed plastic chairs strewn all over the venue as the supporters engaged in a shouting match at the funeral, followed by a duel of pelting stones at each other.

The funeral which was attended by Speaker Wetang’ula and Governor Natembeya was disrupted with mourners fleeing in fear of their lives and to avoid incurring unnecessary injuries.

Here is the video:

Police officers were forced to lob tear gas canisters at the event to stop the two warring factions from escalating the chaos.

Reacting to the chaos, Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi who shared the 41-second clip remarked, “Western shall be liberated from poverty, backwardness, lack of steadfast leadership. No matter what. However painful. It shall be done.”

Despite the cause of the chaotic clash yet to be established at the time of publishing this article, Governor Natembeya has in recent weeks been embroiled in a war of words with Wetang’ula accusing him of poor leadership in the Western region.

The governor on his part accused the National Assembly speaker of propagating poverty in the region, claiming that he was painting a bad image on his community.

“These people are making the Luhya people a brand of jokes everywhere, and they are happy to do so; these are the leaders we have.

"Leaders who in their entire lives have never sacrificed anything for anybody,” Natembeya slammed Wetang’ula on March 17.

Three days prior, Natembeya dismissed claims that he disrespected Wetangula, insisting that he was only pointing out errors of commission by the two leaders and that his actions should not be misconstrued as attacks on the two leaders.

"Those criticising me for pointing out political mistakes of top western Kenya leaders are not genuine in insinuating that I lack respect for Wetang'ula and Mudavadi," Natembeya said during the burial of Margaret Kakai jn Naitiri ward in Tongaren constituency Bungoma county.

"If your brother eats, is it you getting satisfied? Our people would only benefit when we have a political negotiation that we have a say and not political invitations."

Wetangula is yet to respond to the first-time governor over his remarks.
