Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki has pleaded with those discussing succession politics in the Mt Kenya region to respectfully keep his name out of the debate.

In a statement on Tuesday, January 23, the CS termed political talk regarding 2027 or other future elections as tactless, anti-people and primitive, one year after the 2022 general elections took place.

According to him, President William Ruto assigned him a critical docket to transform Kenya into a homeland that is safe for Kenyans, their children and their children's children.

"Political talk about 2027 or other future elections a year after a General Election is tactless, anti-people and primitive. President Ruto has assigned me the role of championing his Administration’s programs for the transformation of our Country into a sustainably safe homeland for this and future generations.

"This sensitive role demands relentless focus and total abstinence from all manner of distracting misadventures. The ongoing debate ought to stop, but if it must proceed, I respectfully request that my name should not be dragged in it," he stated.

Kindiki was reacting to calls from a section of Mt Kenya east region to include his name in the list of those to be running mates of Ruto in 2027.

The debate was ignited by a section of leaders from the region, especially in Murang'a and Kirinyaga counties who want one of their own to replace Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

It is worth noting that President Ruto had picked Gachagua as his running mate ahead of the 2022 general elections over the now Interior CS Kindiki.

Meanwhile, President Ruto, who was speaking during the official opening of Gilgil Technical and Vocational College in Nakuru County, urged Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro and other young politicians seeking supremacy in the Mt Kenya region to tread on the matter cautiously.

He asked Ndindi and other young politicians to accept to be mentored by the elderly politicians before engaging in kingship battles, and even though he appeared to side with Gachagua, he deviated from openly backing the DP as his running mate in 2027, throwing the debate into a scenario of 'anything goes'.

"Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and I said that we would mentor these young men. They should go slow while we are mentoring them because if they go too fast they will spoil things. Relax, do not be in a hurry," he pleaded.

A section of Mt Kenya leaders led by Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu and Gatanga MP Edward Muriu have been openly endorsing Nyoro to be Ruto's running mate in 2027.

On his part, Gachagua termed the fronting of Ndindi Nyoro as Ruto's potential running mate as a plot by some individuals threatening to spark disunity in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.

“Nobody is planning to take someone else's position. These young men should relax.” he addressed Nyoro as well as other politicians from the region.
