Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday, October 13 revealed details of his new foreign travel agreement with President William Ruto after criticism emerged on why they were outside the country at the same time.

Speaking during the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) women's congress, Gachagua revealed that the two Kenya Kwanza government leaders agreed to not travel outside the country simultaneously.

He disclosed that some people who they left behind during their recent travel had misbehaved, prompting him and Ruto to discuss how they would keep those people in check for the benefit of the country.

"You want me to be in charge (when Ruto is away). There was a time when we were abroad, and the people we left behind misbehaved.

"We have now agreed that when he has travelled on a foreign tour, I remain in the country, and when he returns, I leave. And there is no problem," he stated to the delight and applause of the delegates.

Gachagua also asserted his close relationship with Ruto spanning more than two decades, a subject he has been raising in several public appearances since reports of a fallout with Ruto surfaced.

To be specific, the DP revealed that he attended a National Security Council meeting with Ruto on Friday morning as well as a Cabinet meeting and proposed policies which Ruto ratified on the same day.

He would later represent Ruto at events in Nyahururu and Narok counties before the President left the country for China.

"President William Ruto and I have been friends for over 20 years. Our friendship surpasses the presidency," he argued, vowing that "Prophets of doom cannot create a wedge in this government."

Gachagua also made it clear that Ruto's government was still united, with Ruto delegating him duties regarding the government as he was away on foreign trips.

"Don't worry, CS Aisha Jumwa (Gender CS who raised concerns on the stability of the government). The government under President William Ruto is very stable. And there can never be any division or conflict. That is a creation of people who are still living in denial.

"There are many people who gave President Ruto no chance. They are now envious that he is succeeding. He has become a darling of the international community. He is progressing in the economic transformation of this republic. So they want to imagine that there can be a problem. There will be none," he assured, emphasising that he and the President are joined at the hip.

Both Ruto and Gachagua as well as Prime Cabinet Secretary (CS) Musalia Mudavadi were out of the country in September when the the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced that the prices of Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene fuels surpassed the Ksh200 mark.

Amid public protest, senior government officials engaged the public on social media, however, their statements only served to fan the flames of the protests.

Upon his return to the country, Gachagua swiftly reprimanded government officials, urging them to exercise caution in their interactions with citizens and to adhere to the government's official position on key matters.
