Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on Thursday, May 11 alleged a plot to assassinate Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki a day before former IEBC Chairman, Wafula Chebukati, declared William Ruto as President.

Speaking at the launch of For The Record book - authored by Defence CS Aden Duale - Gachagua claimed that President William Ruto's chief agent in the 2022 elections was the target of an assassination plot on August 14, 2022.

He further alleged that the heinous plot was part of attempts to disrupt Ruto's ascension to power, though he did not reveal the identities of the orchestrators of the plot.

"A man who I don't know whether he will write in his book that he was almost assassinated on August 14 is today the Minister of Interior - Professor Kithure Kindiki," he stated.

As Kindiki and Ruto chose not to thereafter comment on the matter, Gachagua revealed that many of their allies were offered money to abandon Ruto before the elections, a move which flopped.

"What Kindiki said that we have little regard for money is true. Had this team given in to monetary offers, these people would be billionaires. Money was offered left, right and centre for the betrayal of Ruto but great men said no," he went on.

He was making the remarks while detailing how President Ruto's side battled opposition from the regime of former President Uhuru Kenyatta as they ascended to the top seat.

At the same time, Gachagua disclosed that he was once a member of the ODM party, recalling his meeting with the former Garissa Township MP, while noting that President Ruto and Uhuru were once members.

“I met Duale when we were in ODM. By the way, all of us were in ODM; President Ruto, retired President Kenyatta, and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

"So these young boys who came to ODM the other day should respect us as their seniors in ODM," Gachagua noted.

Gachagua added that during his time at the party, the two got acquainted with each other and developed a friendship which withstood the tribulations of politics and manifested in business which the two carried out together.

“We developed a good relationship with Duale and later on we did one or two things in business and he is also a man of honour. If you do a business together he will do what you have agreed,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua would later join Duale in the National Assembly when they were both elected under a Jubilee party ticket. Duale led Gachagua in the National Assembly as the majority leader until his ouster in 2020 following a fallout within the Jubilee party.

“When Duale was sacked I celebrated. I look like a mischievous person for celebrating but I had a good reason. Your Excellency Duale was on our team, but he was not available because he was in Parliament pushing the agenda of Uhuru Kenyatta.

“When he was sacked I was very happy because now he was available for us in strategy and messaging and we took advantage,” Gachagua said.
