The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has warned members of the public against being lured by fraudsters claiming they can hack the agency's portal and change the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.

KNEC on Monday, January 15 shared screenshots of the fraudsters bearing a fake Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of the KNEC website, a trick designed to dupe Kenyans.

In one of the screenshots, the fraudsters could be seen making use of the dark web among other techniques to change the results while maintaining their purported credibility.

The flagged post also directed parents and students to reach out using a specified number on WhatsApp and pay a certain amount for their results to be changed.

“Do not fall prey to fraudsters purporting to be able to change KCSE grades. Don't be conned!” KNEC warned, terming the WhatsApp channel as a fraudulent scheme.

While announcing the results last week, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced that parents and candidates would access the results via the portal alone for the first time in the examination's history, phasing out the SMS channel that Kenyans had relied on for more than 20 years.

The warning comes at a time when several students and parents have raised concern regarding the dismal KCSE results only released a week ago.

Students from Oruba Boys Secondary School in Migori for instance raised complaints about their results, which indicated that most of them scored Ds.

“We sat for the exams as 75 candidates but what we saw was unexpected. It is full of irony. We haven't seen this before,” one of the students, lamented.

Hours after the results were released, parents, students and other stakeholders were left anxious after being unable to access the results via the KNEC portal.

Parents were advised to access the individual 2023 KCSE candidates' examination results online through a link on the KNEC website or directly through the URL: results.knec.ac.ke

However, hours after the announcement, no school was able to immediately access the results of the candidates as the website crashed.

Machogu had assured candidates that the ministry had ensured the system was working.

"This time we have worked with engineers and experts and we are sure that the website is working, and Kenyans will not have the inconveniences we had last time," he said during the release of the results.

Parents were also advised to check for their children's results through the county education offices and their respective schools as KNEC would also dispatch results to sub-county education officers for distribution to exam centres.
