Former Prime Minister and Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga, marks his birthday every January 7 and for his 79th birthday, he had something special in mind for his supporters.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party on Sunday, January 7 shared a series of birthday cakes while announcing its countrywide cake-cutting ceremony spread out across different regions, including in Malindi where Raila will be cutting them from 3 pm at the residence of former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.
The cakes bear significance in Raila's push for maandamano (protests) through messages aimed at pressuring President William Ruto's government to lower the cost of living.

"There will be cake-cutting ceremonies across the county at 3:00 pm today at designated places to celebrate PL Raila Odinga’s birthday. The cutting of the cake will be symbolic… ‘cut the cost of living and make life bearable for Kenyans’," the statement read.
Among other places where the cake-cutting would take place include Kisii CBD roundabout, Siaya Governor's Park, the Tom Mboya Statue in Nairobi CBD and Maili Tatu in Maua, Meru county
Other areas include Taxi Park in Busia, Mikindani Primary School in Mombasa, Hotel Conrad in Kitengela, Kajiado, Mabriver in Kwale, Narok and Kisumu CBD.
Amidst a flurry of messages of goodwill to Raila on his special day, Kenyans should know that January 7 is an even more special day for him as he shares his birthday with a series of Kenyan and world-famous personalities.
Citizen TV prime-time news anchor and renowned media personality Jeff Koinange turns 58 today, having earned accolades for his contribution and achievements in the media industry.
His former colleague, Julie Gichuru, also turned a year older on January 7.
"I am brimming with joy and gratitude. Thankful for family, friends, life and love. Each new day brings opportunity and challenge, and I continue to be thankful for both. Thankful for the gift of life. Thankful for the gift of love. Thankful for the lessons and growth. May God bless you all, always," she stated on Instagram marking her 50th birthday.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and Thirdway Alliance Secretary General Fred Okang'o also have their birthdays on that date.
Raila is also joined by international celebrities marking their birthdays on January 7 such as motorsport legend Lewis Hamilton, actor Nicholas Cage as well as former Chelsea and Real Madrid forward Eden Hazard.
Also included are Electronic Dance Music (EDM) DJ Hardwell, Avengers actor Jeremy Renner, middle-distance runner Caster Semenya, junior United States (US) senator Rand Paul and Blue Ivy Carter, the first-born daughter of musicians Beyoncé and Jay-Z.
Others include Irrfan Khan, an Indian film producer & actor known for films such as Slumdog Millionaire and Life of Pi and Ruth Negga, an Irish-Ethiopian actress who starred in films such as World War Z and 12 Years a Slave and series such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Deceased persons who were born on January 7 included Hudson Fysh, who was an Australian aviator, businessman and co-founder of Australian air carrier Qantas, Millard Fillmore who was the 13th President of the United States (US) and Italian Pope Gregory XIII who introduced the Gregorian (New Style) calendar in 1582.
Others include Soviet-Russian cosmonaut Valery Kubasov who performed the 1st welding experiments in space and Charles Addams, an American artist and cartoonist for New Yorker and The Addams Family known for darkly humorous and macabre characters.
