Martha Karua Dresses Down Ruto Over Plot To Kill Chebukati
Karua put Ruto to task by urging him to explain the motive of uncovering the allegations...

Azimio la Umoja principal, Martha Karua, has accused President William Ruto of allegedly abusing his office after he made public details of an alleged plot to kidnap and murder the former chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Wafula Chebukati.
In a Twitter thread posted on Wednesday, January 18, Karua put Ruto to task by urging him to explain the motive of uncovering the allegations merely hours towards the end of Chebukati's six-year tenure at the commission.
She further blamed Chebukati for keeping silent on the matter, citing the presidential petition at the Supreme Court as the perfect grounds to have exposed the allegations. According to her, if the statements were true, immediate action should have been taken.
"Why would such a serious allegation of attempted kidnap and murder of IEBC chair be made six months after the elections and why is the allegation by Mr William Ruto a third party and not by Chebukati himself?
"Why did Chebukati not disclose this to the court during the presidential petition or better still report the matter to the police? Six months into the Ruto regime why has no action been taken if these allegations have any iota of truth?" she posed.
The former running mate of former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, believed that the Ruto regime was using the murder plot as a weapon against the opposition, in what she termed as a propaganda mission.
She also expressed that the allegations risked compromising the Justice Aggrey Muchelule-led tribunal set up to investigate the infamous Cherera Four consisting of Irene Masit, the only surviving IEBC commissioner, and former commissioners Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyang'aya and Francis Wanderi.
Karua also wondered if Ruto was prepared to face the law in seeking justice for Chebukati.
"My take is that this is carefully designed propaganda by a regime desperate to gain legitimacy by spewing outrageous falsehoods aimed at hoodwinking the public while undermining its competition.
"It is irresponsible for a leader to abuse public office to make unsubstantiated allegations against his competition and against public officers junior to him (cherera four) to the extent of compromising the ongoing Tribunal against one of them. Is Ruto ready to record a statement?" she challenged.
This comes as Raila's allies demanded the President to form a commission of inquiry after making the claims of the assassination plot on Chebukati on Tuesday, January 17 during the meeting with independent commissions and constitutional offices at State House in Nairobi.
Narok Senator Ledama Olekina termed as serious allegations that need to be uncovered and urged him to extend the inquiry to cover the previous elections whereby officials lost their lives under mysterious circumstances.
Emabakasi East MP Babu Owino however believed that the President and Chebukati should stop focusing on matters to do with the 2022 general elections.
On his part, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna however expressed concern regarding the claims which he viewed as weighty and wondered if he would support his claims with solid proof when the official probe into the events leading up to the August 15, 2022 announcement is launched.
Chebukati's farewell letter shared at 1.46 am on Wednesday left many wondering if he was avoiding publicity owing to the number of questions generated by Ruto's confession made on Chebukati's last day in office.
Chebukati, Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu's six-year term in office came to an end on January 17, 2023. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua assured the trio of security by the government even after they retire.
