A member of the County Assembly (MCA) in Murang’a, Mark Wainaina, has died. The demise of the politician has struck a blow to the United Democratic Alliance Party (UDA) given that this was one of its key members in the Mt Kenya county.

Wainaina died while undergoing treatment for a rare medical condition that had affected him for a while. He was diagnosed with a severe pulmonary disease that had caused his lungs to fail, prompting the family to take him to the hospital.

''It is with a heavy heart that I share the news I never thought I’d have to write: we have lost my best friend, Hon. Mark Wainaina. Despite his incredible fight and the tireless efforts of the medical team, Mark passed away peacefully, as confirmed by the final ECG report today,'' Wainaina's best friend identified as Amos Mwangi, who is also the chairperson of the Murang'a High School Alumni, shared.

Wainana, who was a nominated MCA, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at one of the hospitals after his condition worsened.

The politician's death was announced after the doctors attending to him confirmed that the final electrocardiogram (ECG) test, a process used to record the electrical signals in the heart, showed that he was no longer alive.

"We are profoundly grateful for the unwavering support, prayers, and love you have shown during this difficult journey. Mark was a true fighter, but God, in His wisdom, called him home," Mwangi added.

Further confirming his demise was Nominated MCA Sharleen Wambui Maina who wrote "Just because he carried the name Hon before his name! He was abused, he was tormented, he was ridiculed and he was called all manner of names! So what was his mistake exactly? A man from a very humble background representing the PWDs in Murang’a county assembly!!!"

"And the lord asked me, so what will you say to those who abused him and ridiculed him in his time of need? And I said to the lord, give them plenty of peace, maintain them in good health and bless them, Lord….Amen! Rest well Mark Wainaina," she stated.

The County Assembly of Murang'a had not issued any statement concerning the passing of the MCA at the time of publishing.

Earlier on, the family of the late MCA and Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata appealed for financial assistance to aid in offsetting the medical bills of the leader.

''The Murang'a County Assembly Members Caucus invites you to a fundraising dinner in aid of one of our Members, Hon. Mark G. Wainaina who has been diagnosed with a severe pulmonary disease that has caused both of his lungs to fail,’’ Kang'ata shared.

Information from the organisers of the event revealed that the medical contributions would be followed by a bigger fundraiser at Sagret Hotel located in Milimani, Nairobi, on Friday, November 15.

Wainana is a close ally of the Murang’a Governor, who has been notably present in his social media posts since his nomination to represent Wangu Ward in the assembly.

In February 2023, Kang’ata attended a thanksgiving ceremony for the MCA held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church of Kenya in Kirogo.

The fundraiser event comes at a time when the UDA government has been urging Kenyans to register for the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) to cater to such medical emergencies.
