TV reporter Sharon Barang’a, on Wednesday, July 5, announced that she had joined China Global Television Network (CGTN) Africa, days after she left TV47.

Barang'a stated that she would be working with the China state-owned media house but will be based in Nairobi.

China Global Television Network (CGTN) is the international division of the state media outlet China Central Television (CCTV), which was launched in 2016.

Barang'a however did not reveal details of her new job, including her contract and roles.

"My new home. This week, I started a new chapter in my career. To everyone who has been following up on my journey, cheering me up & praying for me...Asanteni sana (Thank you very much)," she wrote, sharing an image of the CGTN newsroom.

The announcement came barely a week after she left TV47 where she worked as an Education Editor.

Her farewell on Thursday, June 29 was an emotional one despite being marked with a cake-cutting session even as her former colleagues wished her well in her next course of action.

"My farewell party just went down. Today was my last day at TV47...I cried, I 'crewed', it has been an emotional day leaving a company that received me warmly when I was going through a rough patch in my life.

"TV47 became more than just a company I worked for. It literally became family as it provided a soft landing for me. I will forever be indebted to this brand that I hold so dear," Barang'a wrote.

Before joining TV47, Barang'a worked at Nation Media Group for eight years as a senior Education Reporter for NTV. She was unfortunately among the group that was laid off during the Covid-19 period in 2020.

Her show ‘Learning Curve’ aired on NTV on Tuesdays at 9:00 PM. Apart from working at NTV and TV47, Barang’a worked as an editor at Ukweli Video Productions and as a scriptwriter at the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT).

Barang'a won the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ) Early Childhood Development Reporting Contest owing to her prowess in education reporting and also joined the Mandela Washington Fellowship program, funded by the U.S. Department of State in 2017.

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) alumnus with over 13 years of experience is a co-founder of a nonprofit organization that provides stationery to needy learners from arid and semi-arid regions in Kenya.

By Barang'a joining CGTN, she is expected to brush shoulders with some of the most talented Kenyan journalists in the industry that the media house has hired over the years, with the goal of promoting a cultural connection between Africa and China.

Her Kenyan counterpart, Idah Waringa, who rose to prominence as NTV's sports anchor, joined CGTN English as its news editor, though she is based in Beijing, China.
