Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya made his February 2023 payslip public while responding to remarks made by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua comparing the government to a company where shareholders with the most significant investments reap the most enormous benefits.

Salasya used the post to criticise the Deputy President by demonstrating how Kenyans regardless of social or political standing in the country are subjected to harsh salary cuts.

“Let me demonstrate to Hon Aaron Cheruiyot, Deputy President Gachagua my great friend CS Murkomen that all Kenyans have shares in this country.

“I contribute Ksh300,000 plus to revenue and the president is the only watchman for our contributions and it's our right to ask for development,” he wrote.

From the payslip he shared on Thursday, February 23, the first-time lawmaker was earning a gross salary of Ksh1,171,525, including a basic salary of Ksh426,000.

He also earned an administrative allowance of Ksh134,000, a house allowance of Ksh150,000, a sitting allowance of Ksh90,000 telephone allowance of Ksh15,000 and a vehicle fixed cost of Ksh356,525.

But despite the fat paycheck, he only took home Ksh97,197 after an array of deductions totalling Ksh1,074,327.

This includes PAYE tax of Ksh337,840, NHIF Ksh1,700, staff pension of Ksh53,676, ration and messing Ksh3,960 and Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association membership of Ksh5,000.

Other deductions included a car loan of Ksh89,150, sacco payments of Ksh20,000 and a mortgage contribution of Ksh563,000.

His decision to share the payslip led to reactions from Kenyans with many wondering about the nature of the astonishing deductions from his salary.

"Honest advice ndugu (my brother). Cancel the mortgage and car loan. Move to an apartment. Hire a car until you buy it in cash. This is what they do to new MPs. They entice them with all these so that you can keep begging. Follow my advice and you'll save more! You'll thank me later!" wrote Tony Mureithi

"Now you're giving a future vetting committee /public ammunition to use against you in future. This payslip will be the starting point. Apart from that house and car, you'll explain how you'll have made millions.  But I feel it's a trap by MPs using you to ask for a higher salary," weighed in Philosopher254.
