Police officers privy to a break-in at Prime Cabinet Secretary (CS) Musalia Mudavadi's Karen home on Sunday, January 29 have offered a new twist in the matter.

Lang'ata OCPD Monica Kimani, who took over the investigations, denied reports of the incident which saw a TV set and a gas cylinder stolen.

According to her, such an incident would not have occurred on the premises of a senior government official, in this case, Mudavadi's home, which is heavily guarded and a security breach is almost unlikely.

However, the home where the stolen items were kept is only 10 meters away from Mudavadi's primary residence and serves as a storage facility. It is located next to another house used by household employees.

This now contradicts a report by Mudavadi's son, Moses, who claimed that a house help tipped him with information regarding the incident. Despite Kimani dismissing the reports, mainstream media revealed that ten General Service Unit (GSU) officers were questioned over the incident.

CCTV footage which was later retrieved showed two thieves jumping over the perimeter wall and concealing one of the cameras with a plastic object to hide their identity. They then stole the property before escaping.

"After reviewing CCTV footage, it was established that two male strangers gained entry into the compound by jumping over the perimeter wall between 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm.

“They then accessed some rooms at the compound and stole the property before escaping,” read part of an initial police report.

Preliminary reports indicated that the electric fence of Mudavadi's home was faulty, allowing the thugs to sneak into the premises and get out undetected.

The security of senior government officials like the Prime Cabinet Secretary is usually provided by a combination of government agencies, including the GSU. These agencies are responsible for the personal protection of the officials and the security of their homes and official buildings.

This matter took centre stage with Inspector General of Police (IG) Japhet Koome under pressure to clarify the withdrawal of security detail attached to former President Uhuru Kenyatta as well as former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, and former PS Karanja Kibicho.

However, IG Koome said the reorganisation of the security detail by the National Police Service (NPS) saw security team leaders swapped out for a lower rank, as required by law.

“There is a presidential escort commander who is an assistant IG. Those other units whether protecting the deputy president or retired president must be of lower rank for command and control purposes.

“The officer who was there was an assistant IG, I have recalled that officer to be given command and responsibility commensurate with his rank,” Koome said.

He also defended the move, terming it as in good faith even though its timing was questioned given the political nature of the country at the moment.
