National carrier, Kenya Airways is set to launch direct flights from Nairobi to Maputo in Mozambique from June 14, 2024.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 9, the airline explained that the decision to launch direct flights was in response to growing demand for travel between East and Southern Africa.

Julius Thairu, Chief Commercial and Customer Officer at Kenya Airways remarked on the addition of Maputo to KQ's network as one that strengthens ties between Kenya and Mozambique, opening doors for increased trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.

“The demand for air travel is soaring, and we're determined to meet it by expanding our reach and fostering connections between Africa's rich cultures and thriving economies,” Thairu explained.

Beyond its designation as a major trade hub for southern Africa, Maputo enchants visitors with its rich tapestry of history and culture.

Portuguese colonial influences are evident in the city's architecture, while vibrant markets and a flourishing art scene offer a glimpse into contemporary Mozambican life.

The airline promised its passengers that Maputo will offer an unforgettable experience whether they seek relaxation on pristine beaches or exploration of fascinating museums.

From June 14, KQ will operate three flights per week to Maputo, with Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays becoming the flexible gateways to exploring the dynamic city.

For the Nairobi to Maputo flight, KQ740 will leave the Kenyan capital at 9.50 am local time and arrive at 1.00 pm Central African Time (2.00 pm Kenyan time).

For the return flight, KQ741 will leave Maputo at 1.50 pm Central African Time (2.50 pm Kenyan time) and arrive in Nairobi at 6.45 pm local time. The flight time between the four cities is four hours.

Beyond Maputo, this expansion complements KQ's broader network strategy for FY2024, which also boasts increased frequencies to popular destinations like New York, Paris, Lagos, Accra, and Freetown.

Demand for Kenya Airways flights has been increasing over the months and years, which has led to positive fortunes in terms of its overall finances.

On Tuesday, March 26, Kenya Airways posted an operating profit of Ksh10.5 billion for the first time since 2017 for the year ended December 31, 2023, a turn-around from an operating loss of Ksh5.6 billion in 2022, a 287% growth.
