President William Ruto has appointed Professor Lukoye Atwoli as the non-executive chairperson of the board of directors of Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital.

In a Gazette Notice dated Friday, November 3, the Head of State revealed that Lukoye, the son of Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Francis Atwoli, will hold the position for three years.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the State Corporations Act and Paragraph 6 (1) (a) of the Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital Order, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoints Lukoye Atwoli to the non-executive chairperson of the board of directors of Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital," read the notice in part.

Lukoye is known by many as a professor championing matters of mental health research in the country.

He currently holds two positions as dean of Aga Khan's Medical College and also co-chairs the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine's Board on Global Health.

The medical practitioner was recently elected as an international member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) headquartered in Washington DC, United States.

At the same time, President Ruto appointed Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Ndegwa Waititu to be the Chancellor of the Meru University of Science and Technology.

He will hold the position for a period of five years, with effect from November 1, 2023.

Lucas Mogoa was appointed as a member of the State Corporations Advisory Committee, for a period of three years, with effect from November 1, 2023. Mogoa was an aspirant for the Bobasi constituency seat under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

Ruto also appointed former Ijara Member of Parliament Sophia Abdi Noor to be the Chairperson of the National Council for Children Services, for a period of three (3) years, until November 3, 2026.

In other appointments, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki appointed Benson Logiel Lokwang to be a member of the Non-Governmental Organization Co-ordination Board, for a period of three years.

Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u named Peter Kibet Koech to be a member of the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis, for a period of three years, with effect from November 3, 2023.
