Spiro, Africa’s largest electric vehicle (EV) player, has taken a groundbreaking step in promoting gender inclusivity and advancing EV infrastructure by launching all-women assembly lines for motor and charger production.
This is in line with the current initiative being spearheaded by the Spiro Academy, aimed at upskilling and creating social impact in the local communities in countries where Spiro is currently operating.
This initiative not only empowers women in the workforce but also enhances Spiro’s manufacturing capabilities to meet the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions.
High Value Components in Kenya’s Manufacturing Facility
Through strategic joint venture partners, Spiro has launched several state-of-the-art facilities, including:
- Motor Assembly Line: Spiro’s all-women motor assembly line is set to produce motors on a daily basis, ensuring efficiency and precision in manufacturing.
- Home Charger Production: A newly established line will manufacture home chargers daily, catering to both residential use and battery swap stations.
- Fast Charger Line: Spiro’s fast charger production will also deliver units on a daily basis, which will be strategically deployed to enhance EV charging accessibility across key locations.
This initiative underscores Spiro’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and women’s empowerment while addressing Africa’s urgent infrastructure needs for electric mobility.
Speaking on Tuesday, March 25, Kaushik Burman, the CEO of Spiro, noted that Spiro differentiates from other competitors in terms of affordability and high-standard products, with a main focus on the localization of industrialization.

“We are aiming to assemble at least ten times what we are currently assembling in Kenya, with the long-term goal being having more than fifty thousand Spiro bikes on the road this year.
"Spiro is an ecosystem, we are not just a two wheeler electric motorcycle company, we are a tech driven company, from energy provision to emobility to reduction of carbon emissions to integration of artificial intelligence in our battery models, the goal here is to power Africa with Africa centred solutions with the slogan Buy Africa, Build Africa,” he remarked.
On his part, Raymond Camina, the Deputy Country Head in Kenya, opened up on plans to bring on board world class partners who will bring in not only quality but will also transfer the knowledge onto the Kenyan space in the manufacturing facility where the bikes will continue being developed technologically.
While expressing anticipation for the Spiro bikes to roll onto Kenyan roads, Camina affirmed that Spiro would continue pushing the affordability and adaptability of the Spiro bikes as well as expansion, with plans to expand everywhere, including to the county level.
“This is the only plant in the world where women have been given the forefront in terms of assembling the most important components onto a bike. It goes to show how important it is that we are paying attention to details,” he remarked.
“It goes to show off the great plans as an organisation that we have. The plans that we have are quite grand. We are sitting in a space where we will be partnering with a commercial bank, KCB to be precise, and we have extended that onto different SACCOs around the whole country where Kenyans will be able to even afford more Spiro bikes at more affordable prices and today the motorline marks the beginning of the very first step where we are going to embark in this exciting journey.”
With over 24,000 electric bikes and 17 million battery swaps completed, Spiro is accelerating its expansion by establishing state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities for high-value EV components. Spiro remains dedicated to maintaining gender balance as a signal of empowerment across its six operating markets in line with Sustainable Development Goal number five on gender equality and empowering women and girls.
Spiro’s investment in women-led manufacturing marks a significant milestone in the African EV industry, paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
