The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on Thursday, October 5 announced the appointment of Gospel singer Rufftone Smith Mwatia as its regional manager for the Nairobi region.

The ruling coalition announced in a notice that Rufftone will be tasked with overseeing grassroots elections as the party prepares to elect new officials in December this year.

Rufftone was appointed alongside other individuals picked as regional managers and they include Alex Khamisi (Western) Khalif Abdi (Coast), Paul Kiprop (North Rift), and Peter Mbogo (Central Kenya) among others.

In a statement, UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala emphasised that the appointments were made to guarantee smooth, transparent grassroots elections.

The latest appointments were a result of resolutions passed by the National Governing Council (NGC) concerning party structure expansion and the election process, which UDA resolved to hold electronically.

"Top on their in-tray is the smooth and seamless execution of the UDA Party's forthcoming grassroots elections scheduled for December 9, 2023,"  the party stated as Malala met the appointed officials at the party headquarters to sensitize them on their new roles before deployment to their respected counties.

Rufftone, who is an ardent ally of President William Ruto, initially intended to run for the Nairobi Senatorial seat but shelved his ambitions to back Margaret Wanjiru.

Nonetheless, he played a key role in Ruto's presidential campaigns in Nairobi and its satellite towns in the Metropolitan as an emcee at various campaign events in the city zone.

UDA has been courting musicians in an increasing fashion and winning them over to the party to enhance its profile and create a positive appeal among its youthful supporters.

On Wednesday, April 12, the party embarked on a poaching spree of renowned Kenyan musicians, including celebrity couple Diana Marua and Bahati.

The couple were among the likes of MC Jessy, KRG The Don, Diana Marua, DJ Kwenye Beat, Sammy Boy, Mash Mwana, and Dufla Diligon among other musicians and entertainers who joined the ruling party.
