Amidst a wave of concerns regarding increased cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and femicide cases in Kenya, an undated video surfaced on Friday, January 19 showing an argument between a couple which saw the man resort to assaulting his lover.

The incident which took place outside Quiver Lounge and Grill nightclub along Thika Road in Nairobi was captured in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) in the early morning hours.

In the clip, the woman in a white-striped short dress was seen arguing with the man wearing a white jacket, to whom she later identified as her husband.

With almost no traffic plying the road, indicating that this took place way past midnight, the man began shoving the woman before slapping her on the cheek.

Here is the video:

She was seen covering her face as the man continued shoving her to the point she retaliated in what escalated into a full-blown confrontation as the driver of the car parked right in front of them kept recording the proceedings for one minute.

The driver then stepped out to intervene, cautioning his fellow man to stop attacking his lover in his presence, ignoring the possible risk of the other man violently going after him.

However, the fighting man had shown the driver a photo of his wife and their child, while attributing to a male friend flirting with her as the cause of the altercation.

The woman, reduced to tears, claimed that the misunderstanding was caused by the man's jealousy because the woman had covered all the bills at the nightclub, including his friend whom she had invited to party with them.

"I just said I am going to pay the bill because I am the one who told them we should come here. He got angry that I was paying all the bills including his friends.

"And I told him no, I am the one who brought him. This man, I have fed him for five years, while he was jobless. Then he is beating me because he has a job. Let him give me my things so that I go," she lamented as the driver begged the couple to return home.

The man, revealed to be working at a petrol station, then tried to defend himself saying he did not know his wife was coming as the friend called him to come over.

The video divided Kenyans on social media, and while some thought it was wise not to intervene during couple fights, many criticised the man for his actions, especially with the recent rise in domestic violence cases that have culminated in cases of women being brutally murdered by men they were interacting with.

Meanwhile on Friday, January 19, Presidential Advisor on Women’s Rights, Harriet Chiggai led a section of women leaders in condemning the rising cases of femicide in the country, two weeks into 2024, as they vowed to pursue all legal channels in Parliament to address the intimate partner violence cases.

“It is my commitment and that of the government to do all within our power first to nab the suspects but to also urge the judiciary to expedite cases of intimate partner violence,” the presidential advisor said.

“I also commit to working with my sisters in Parliament to push for stiffer penalties as well as recognizing that intimate partner violence cases are acknowledged for their misogynistic nature”.

Chiggai also fired a warning shot to future rapists and women murderers as the government would crack down on them, saying “Those who are planning to rape and kill our girls, we are putting you on notice, your days are numbered!”

She also announced that the government will work with the Judiciary to expedite cases of intimate partner violence and recognize them for their misogynistic nature.

Additionally, she asked women in Kenya to stay cautious while engaging with individuals online adding that GBV was being done online. According to her, “GBV has now taken the form of technologically facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV)."
