Police in Kericho County on Thursday, January 18 launched a manhunt for a young woman reported to have escaped from a lodging after discovering the body of a 60-year-old pastor she had spent the night with.

According to reports, the pastor, an elder who doubled as an assistant pastor at a Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church in Ketitui, met his untimely death while enjoying an evening in the lodging with the female companion.

The woman had discovered the pastor's body and promptly notified the management of the accommodation before she escaped the scene.

Belgut sub-county police commander Charles Kibati reportedly confirmed the incident, revealing that the pastor was found dead on Wednesday, January 17 with no visible injuries and without any clothes on.

A used condom was discovered at the scene. It was suspected that the deacon may have overdosed on sexual enhancement drugs to spice up their night.

“He was found dead with no visible injuries. He had no clothes at the time,” he said.

The body was transported to the Kericho County Referral Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy is scheduled to be conducted.

Meanwhile, investigators are diligently pursuing leads to locate and identify the woman who was with the pastor.

This is not the first instance of a man of God dying in a lodging, in what police suspect were deaths induced by sexual enhancement drugs. 

On July 9, 2023, police launched investigations into the mysterious death of a Catholic priest who served at St. Peter's Church in Ruai, Nairobi, in a hotel room in Gatanga sub-county.

Gatanga sub-county police commander Lawrence Njeru told the press that the pastor, a 43-year-old, was in the company of a woman who was alleged to be his lover before the incident occurred on Saturday morning, July 8.

A subsequent police report revealed that the woman was a 32-year-old working as his colleague in the same church.

The incident made headlines in the country with a section of Kenyans criticising the deceased for allegedly acting contrary to his doctrines, amidst concerns emerging about the safety and well-being of individuals, particularly those in religious positions, while engaging in personal activities outside their pastoral duties.

However, the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) called out media houses for covering the matter in an insensitive manner that violated the dignity of the priest.

The Council directed the outlets to respect the privacy of the deceased and also ensure balanced reporting.
