A motorist driving in traffic along Kenyatta Avenue coming from Valley Road in Nairobi captured on camera a gang going on the rampage robbing motorists and pedestrians along the road heading to the Central Business District (CBD).
A one-minute video seen by Viral Tea showed the gang consisting of several members jogging boldly down the busy road with traffic moving opposite their direction on Thursday, March 9.
As the driver approaches the junction at National Social Security Fund (NSSF) offices, three of the gang members break off and appeared to have snatched a phone from a pillion passenger on a boda boda and split in different directions, oblivious of a traffic police officer who could be seen manning the junction.
"They're going round stealing from people. Look at this one, they were planning to steal from the nduthi guy.
Here's the video:
"They're many. They're looking for who has their car open," stated the driver as he observed some of them climb aboard a waiting motorbike before driving away.
The driver later appealed to Nairobi residents to avoid the Central Business District (CBD) as the gang was believed to have camped there from their jog down Valley Road.
"Guys, please avoid CBD. There are like 100 guys going around stealing from people, they've come all the way from Valley Road.
"We came with them with the traffic, you accelerate but when you run into traffic they start approaching, they are even breaking into people's cars and stealing from passengers on a motorbike, so just avoid CBD," he said in a voice recording circulated across WhatsApp groups and heard by Viral Tea.
It is however worth it to note that this is not a new case of robbers using all manner of tactics to steal from motorists in the middle of heavy traffic, even as social media users implored the authorities to take the necessary action.
An undated video that surfaced in November 2022 showed how a motorist driving along Jogoo Road managed to successfully foil an attempted robbery on him which began when he saw a man donning a black jacket head towards his car.
He could be seen cutting to the front before disappearing to the back, beyond the view of the motorist who was filming the entire proceedings.
A hawker stopped beside him selling his wares before the traffic started moving. All the while, another man in a black jacket ghosted past him as he slowly drove off.
Panning the camera towards his side mirror, the driver realised he was being targeted when the second man started jogging towards him to the point of knocking the side mirror backwards before jogging away, seeming to apologise for doing so by accident.
However, instead of opening the window to readjust the mirror, the motorist kept his window closed as the second man crossed the busy road to the other side.
His left mirror was folded inwards, therefore he used the car's power mirror system to adjust them back into place. Meanwhile, the first man was captured talking on his phone.
This has been a trick used several times by attempted robbers to force motorists to open their windows and doors so that they can mug them off.
The tactic gained prominence on Monday, June 21, 2021, when KBC anchor Shiksha Arora narrated how three robbers attacked her from her car at Globe Roundabout in Nairobi.
On Monday, February 6, Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki revealed that mugging cases in Nairobi which were rampant between September and October 2022, had been contained.
