The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) had on Friday night, October 7 closed a section of Uhuru Highway for a period of three days.

A notice by the authority revealed that the closure began at 10 pm and will continue until Tuesday, October 11, at 5 am.

The closure was for purposes of construction works to uplift a section of the busy road.

"This closure is to pave way for the construction of two cross culverts in that section of Mombasa Road," read the notice in part.

KeNHA provided alternative routes for motorists to use as it issued apologies for the inconveniences while working to improve its road network.

"Motorists heading towards the City Centre are advised to take Bunyala Road and Lower Hill Road towards Haile Selassie Avenue.

'We apologize for any inconveniences that may be caused as we endeavour to provide an efficient, safe and reliable road network," added the statement.

Some motorists had reported being forced to use the alternative routes after relying on part of the Mombasa Road section after the directive was enforced.

Police were also deployed on various sections of the road to guide motorists and man traffic. Motorists were advised to drive carefully and observe all traffic rules.

Uhuru Highway was one of the most heavily affected roads by the construction of the Nairobi Expressway, which now towers above it.

The Ksh87.9 billion flagship project by former President Uhuru Kenyatta won plaudits for aiding in reducing traffic between Westlands and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by providing an express journey between the two areas- at a fee that is.

On Friday, July 15, the road was named the Best Road Transport Infrastructure of The Year in the Afrika Mashariki Transport Awards.

"Celebrations of triumph as KeNHA scoops awards in the Africa Mashariki Transport Awards. The Nairobi Expressway led in The Road Transport Infrastructure of the Year Award while Virtual Weighbridge emerged 2nd Runners Up in the Best Innovation Technology in Transport," KeNHA stated in part.

The Expressway beat the likes of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) as well as the expansion of the Kenol - Marua Road, the Ngong-Suswa Road as well as the revamped Nairobi Commuter Rail.

The elevated road was recently recognised around the globe by TIME magazine, which also listed Nairobi as among the world's 50 greatest places.
