Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage obtained by Viral Tea has revealed an alleged altercation between a Nigerian man and a Kenyan woman amidst the height of campaigns conducted against rising femicide and gender-based violence cases in the country.

The 33-second clip dated March 27 showed the woman seated in a wheelchair led out of the kitchen by one of her employees towards the sitting room, after which she resumed her duties in the kitchen.

With her right foot covered in a plaster bandage, appearing to indicate that she suffered an injury, the woman was seen pointing to the Nigerian man who burst out of the blue and slapped her on the cheek before descending on her with blows.

The violent altercation drew the attention of the two employees who moved to shield her as the man kept raining blows on her. At some point, he was seen shoving one of the workers.

The man could be seen rushing back to attack the woman before he ceased and grabbed a kitchen tissue.

Speaking to Viral Tea, a friend of the woman privy to the matter revealed that the man had abused the woman multiple times and for some periods.

On inquiry on whether she reported the matter to the police, the friend confirmed this though feared that the man would find a way to be set free after being arrested as he is believed to be a wealthy man.

By the time of publishing this story, the authorities were yet to take action against the man. It was also unclear what caused the altercation.

In terms of taming the rising cases of femicide, different stakeholders clamoured for the safety of women in the country while couples were advised on how to solve their cases amicably.

Femicide cases have been on the rise in 2024, with over 15 women murdered countrywide.

Statistics amassed by Africa Data Hub reveal that in 75 per cent of cases, the femicide killings were committed by a person who knew the murdered woman - an intimate partner, relative or friend.

Nearly two-thirds of perpetrators were currently or had previously been in an intimate relationship with the victim, with husbands, and then boyfriends seen as the biggest culprits.

Husbands accounted for the most cases at 241 with boyfriends following at 130. Comparatively, in only about 15% of cases, the woman was killed by a stranger.
